Bummed out
Really bummed out that my 2011 Silverado 1500 LT w/trailer pkg. cannot tow more than 7000 lbs! Currently towing a Surveyor 23 sport TT and want to move up to a small x-tra light 5r with more room. Any one have suggestions !

Bigger TV. There aren't any other suggestions. (Unless you rebuild the truck.)

What engine and drivetrain do you have? I have a 2011 Silverado LT with the 5.3L engine and can tow much more than that. My truck GVWR is 7000 pounds which limits the payload capacity but that number is different than the trailer towing capacity.

Robbsails, more importantly, what's your driver door sticker say is its payload capacity.
payload is where 1/2 ton trucks fail, regarding towing a 5th wheel.

Most of us have come across this situation...eventually most wanna upgrade trlr only to find out they don't have tow vehicle to do the job...rather than try to modify the tow vehicle to do the job, if you really wanna upgrade, you may have to bite the bullet and upgrade the tow vehicle or be satisfied with what you currently have.

You sure about that 7000 pound rating? My suburban with the 3.42 axle ratio, 4 wheel drive, long wheel base and the K5L heavy duty cooling package, rates it to tow 7900 lbs, GCWR of 14000 lbs. Hard to believe yours is rated lower.

My 2009 Silverado owners manual lists 99 (Count'em - NINETY NINE!!) permutations of the 1500 version with towing capacities from 4800 lbs (2WD, Reg Cab, Std box, 4.3L, 3.23 axle) up to 10,700 lbs (2WD, Ext Cab, Std box, 6.8L, 3.73 axle, Max Trailering package). Most of the permutations are in the 7000-9000 lb range. Mine is 7500 lbs.
So when that salesman says "Oh, a 1/2 ton can pull this," or your buddy says, "That's the same truck I have," be VERY VERY CAREFUL.
BTW: It lists 20 permutations for the 2500 (9600-13000 lbs) and 20 permutations for the 3500 (9100-12500 lbs).
