Cabin Heat with Diesel Engine

Fords Rapid-Heat Supplemental Cab Heater gives me warm air within 45 seconds of starting the truck. My last diesel truck took 10 to 15 miles to warm up enough to provide warm air but this with Rapid-Heat option give me warm air before I can back out of the driveway. Love It for those cold mornings. If you live where it gets cold I would highly recommend this option.

My last VW TDI had a 1500 watt electric forced air heater in it that was nice. The alternator on that 1.9L engine was HUGE!

As much as I liked the instant heat, I liked what my older TDI had: It had a 1500 watt 12V block heater. As soon as you started the engine, the alternator powered the 1500 watt block heater to warm the block up when then gave you heat. I felt that was better for engine longevity....took about 3 minutes to get heat in the cabin with this setup. I ended up installing a zerostart coolant heater on the newer VW TDI so engine was warmed up quicker.

My diesel Jeep Liberty has a viscous coupling belt driven "heater" that heats the coolant. Takes about 5 minutes for engine to warm up in cold weather and keeps engine temps from dropping during extended idling periods. I hate it when it is <0 deg F outside and the water block temperature drops at a red light meaning the hot air temp also decreases coming out of your vents.

That is what Ford has done is added a electric heating element to the heater that provides heat till the engine warms up. It does take upgraded heavy duty alternator or dual batteries and alternator. Here a pic of they element the use...

Could be because I had Chevy 2500HD Diesel that took for ever to warm up, so you may have one.
If I remember right on Ford is 265.00 option.

I also noticed that the truck gets to temp very quick, usually with in 5 to 10 minutes even when it was 27 out.

My Cummins is producing warm air with in 5 Min's during the winter months. I just plug in engine block heater cord ($16.95) over night and this keeps the engine coolant nice and toasty. The block heater is on a timer set for four hours. Than for driving around I use the winter front ($110) to keep the engine warm when not plugged in.

Yes, mine will warm faster if plugged in. Without plugging in is like the above.

I don't know what Ram and GM diesel trucks have but the Ford's diesel comes standard with the supplemental heater in Michigan. I know it's an option in the warmer states.

A 1500 watt zerostart convection coolant heater is a great and affordable block heater that I have installed in several of my diesels. The convection flow of coolant often was enough to defrost the front windshield and instant heat was nice. Only needed to be run for about 45minutes for it to work. Neighbor's loved the fact that my diesel was much quieter on a "cold' start than without the zerostart heater. Timing is advanced in many diesels when it is very cold out and that makes for some LOUD clatter!

Easy answer for a warm truck on a cold morning : remote start. Always have a toasty Ram...

First thing we added to the cummins was remote start. Push the button, drink the coffee then kiss DW bye, and she gets in a nice warm truck and off to work. I get in an ICE COLD work van. I really need to trade her jobs.

Ford is the only of the three that offers an electric supplemental cab heater. The GM twins elevate the idle and drag the torque converter to help the engine heat up faster but no electric heating element.

Block heaters and remote start also help, I have both. But neither can compete with an instant warm electric heating element in the HVAC system. Take it from someone who has all three...

My 2015 GMC has the instant elect. heatDr as an option. But my truck sits out most of the winter and by the time I am out of the driveway it is putting out heat. The heated seats and steering wheel really help.

I have remote start on my ram as well.

Needs to be plugged in.

I have also done a little mod to make the exhaust brake come on, during remote start.
If temp is low enough, it will also high idle on its own. 1100rpm.

I have the Ford with the Spplemental heater. Remote start as i get my jacket on brings the seat up to temp and have warm air when I leave the driveway. We have the highest electrical rates anywhere except the Artic. No way am I plugging it in unless I really have too. Like -20 C..
