I must go to different places around town. I have had a dually, a suburban, and srw pick up. The dually a good some of the time was an issue parking. That is why I went back to srw. We travel with another couple that have a dually and they always suggest we take our truck. But a dually hands down is a cool truck.

interesting....maybe the measurements in PA, NJ, MD & VA are different than others but in those states I have never not fit between the white lines in parking lots....or I have a narrow dually

Well it's too late now, so I'll let you know how it goes. I have had to ensure I stay in the center of lanes, you have to be alert on some narrow back roads. But i'm sure I'll get used to it. As for parking so far the only issue is the length, not the width.

I'm thinking I like your narrow dually concept - got a feeling that I may have one too cuz I've never had it not fit...

Do you already have the truck? or are you truck shopping? If I already had the srw 3500 I would go ahead and tow the trailer without another thought the silverback is a mid level fiver and should not be way over weight with a srw 1ton. There are guys pulling 40ft trailers that weigh some insane numbers with srw trucks, doesn't make it ideal or right but they do it.

If you are truck SHOPPING I would get the dually and be done buying trucks.

I had a 08 2500 6.6L 2 wheel drive and pull my 40'er at 15k. The tuck pulled the weight just fine. I now have 10 3500 with dual wheels. The only reason I switched trucks is to get a newer model and I will be getting a bigger camper one day.

Exactly. Wheelbase and length make it harder to park than width. So long as you back into spots and have enough room in the aisle to get out you're set. Duals haven't stopped me from parking anywhere I originally intended to.

Interesting. I was always afraid of a dually for width. Sounds like the issues are ones I'm already adjusted to.

Yep, the mirrors are like expensive whiskers.

And asquared, if you're used to the truck's length and turning radius, you've cracked the hardest part of a dually. My wife and I went from a SUV (Durango) to this and we've had a pretty decent go. We had some initial paranoia over the width and took turns very wide, but we ultimately got comfortable with it.

I won't debate SRW vs. DRW for towing- I can only say that duallys aren't as much of a pain to drive as they're commonly described.

I thought I'd give a brief update to this story.

After a few weeks driving the dually, it's no longer an issue to drive or park. As long as you find a good spot, or take up two when it's extra tight.

I have now driven over 13,000 miles and have been on many types of roads. By the way there are many bad road's through the US, and there is nothing to prepare you for when you hit a bouncy dip in the road towing at 65+ mph. It's times like these that I'm glad I have a dually. Even with the occasional very bouncy bump, I've never felt like the truck was even close to being out of control.

I've only had to stop once or twice towing up mountains (to cool) as well as slowing down to about 35mph and that was up the Rockies. Otherwise there has been plenty of power from Utah to DC. A few miles of 7+% grades are fine, but 10miles etc of 5+% gets the heat up.

Happy camping!

Hello Matcheson,

Good to hear from you again. Glad it all worked out.

We have now traveled from Dallas to Oregon, through the rockies and cascades, and are on the coast right now. So far, the 1-ton Chevrolet Diesel has not shown any signs of struggle of strain. Temp stays at a level like we were not towing. Mileage around 12 mpg. We are enjoying our trip so far with our Chevrolet 3500 Diesel/Alison and the 37' Columbus by Palomino.

Good luck, and best wishes,

Balaji
