Can 2010 Silverado 3500 tow Silverback

Can someone help with an calculated answer as to if a 2010 Silverado 3500 SRW CrewCab can tow a 2014 SilverBack 35QB4.

Plate on Silverado says:
GVWR: 9900lb.
Front: 4860#
Rear: 6390#

I can't confirm exact 5th wheel details yet but they are around
GVWR: 15500 - 15800#
Unloaded: 12176#
Hitch: 1840 - 1950#

I've been looking at the tow ratings, thinking that I need to keep within the limit of which trailer life 2010 tow guide says 14800# is limit.

I have also been following discussion about 2500 vs 3500's and some say 2500 can tow same as 3500. But in this guide they can tow more?

This doesn't seem to match up in reality, or am I reading this wrong. Any clarification welcome as I am looking to buy a truck asap.

Your limiting factor here will be payload. That is a very low payload for a 3500. Is that a gasser or a diesel? A gasser will weigh less affording you more payload. To give you an idea my '14 3500 silverado duramax weighs 8280 lbs (per catscale w/ hitch and family etc) and has an 11600 lb gvwr. I think that truck might not have enough payload to handle the loaded pin weight of that trailer.

Just me and the way I am I would pick a larger TV like a 4500 or F-450.

not sure why your GVWR is so low. Mine is 11,600. Shouldn't be much different if at all. I have a crew cab long bed 4x4 Duramax. My tow capacity is 16,800

In 2010 the GVWR for the 3500 SRW was probably 9900 pounds. But I thought it was boosted before that? Sounds like a base truck with the 6.0L gas motor.
But to answer your question......
At 15,500 GVWR the trailer is going to see 3000 or more pounds of pin weight. Adding a hitch and the already probably 3500 or so pounds on the rear end of the truck, I'm going to tell you that you will likely be overloaded. For sure the tires will be. I see people all the time doing it, but is srill does not make it right or safe.

been looking up numbers also. All the numbers are quite a bit lower than my 2014 SRW 3500.

I'm looking at a diesel. These GVWR values are book/sticker values, I haven't got the TV yet. So its unloaded values.

I want to make sure that this TW and this 5th wheel will tow?

TOW? Yes it can tow that and a whole lot more. The issue is not towing, but rather load carrying capacity. And that your going to be short on when loaded and ready to travel. Step up to a dually, you will not be sorry

or at least a newer single wheel 1 ton. All the numbers on my 2014 are much higher. Definitely not a 3/4 ton with air bags like most do. Get the truck made for the job the first time.

would do the job? Or should I be looking for more GAWR on the rear?

I'm trying to avoid a dually if possible as will be using as main car also.

probably. I think any of the current SRW 1 tons are pretty capable trucks.

How do you know what the truck weighs unloaded on the back wheels to calculate this?

you don't need to know. You need to know payload

I tow a Silverback with a 2500hd diesel. You should have not problem with a 3500 with any of the silverbacks

actually towing isn't the issue. You are probably over payload like most 3/4 ton trucks are

If you go with any of the big 3 one ton SRW with a diesel you will be fine. You do not need a dually.

Nope I am within the payload of my truck.

Payload for a 14-15 Ram 3500 SRW CCSB CTD is 4000lbs+. 11,700lb GVW. Plenty for any Silverback IMO. Jump up to a DRW and the payload goes to 5740lbs. Way overkill.


FWIW I'd tow most SB's with my 2500 CTD. I use the RAWR anyway. If I was buying new to go with a predetermined 5er then I'd def go 3500. For now I'll just make do with what I have.

almost identical specs for GM, Ford probably close too, but haven't looked. Just pick what flavor you like and you will be fine
