I agree with all of you, it would be easy to pack a lot, I have the added worry that on my p/u I have a topper with a kayak rack so I am adding that to the mix, a 3/4 ton would answer all of this but just not in the cards. I love how FR and all the manufacturers tout that their complete line is 1/2 ton towable but when you really put the pencil to the paper a different picture comes up.

I think you are too close to the edge; especially since MI to FL is long haul. IMO, the longer the haul, the farther below your limit you should be. I say this from the standpoint of "towing satisfaction". When you are maxed out, it is a lot less fun pulling on a long haul; it gets old.

I am starting to feel that way my self, even with the lighter trailer I will have a load, but at least I have about 700 lbs to play with and a better tongue weight also, now to get the wife to agree

Not sure if this is an option - but after reading the first post, thought I would throw it out there.

Is buying the trailer in FL an option? Buy it local, either tow it or have it delivered to where you want, and then maybe find a local storage facility for the off-season. The fuel savings from not towing back and forth would probably pay for a good part of the storage cost.

If you don't plan to use it in MI, this would give you the option to buy whatever size trailer you want.

My parents had people down the street that went South every year, and they bought the trailer down there and stored it for when they came north. They had a large fifth wheel before and he figured what he saved in gas paid for a good part of the storage fees.

We have thought about buying in Florida and leaving, I have heard that trailers just sitting through the summers that it can have brutal effect on them with the uv rays on the roof and the high humidity inside, but it is a thought.

We have a 2014 Salem 30QBSS with a dry weight of #6700 and dry hitch #980. I have a 2010 GMC Sierra 4X4 extended with HD tow package. The truck can tow the TT with the following exceptions:
  1. A good WDH is a must. The rear springs on these 1500 trucks are light for a smoother ride.
  2. Gas mileage is down to around 9 - 11 mpg (expected).
  3. Tires, if you still have the stock tires (P rated) replace them with LT tires.
  4. The biggest problem will be the transmission. The temps can creep up there if you don't watch it. I would recommend a deeper trans pan (finned aluminium) and a bigger trans cooler than even the 'HD Tow package' cooler.
We camp and tow locally so these are solvable issues for us. I don't know if I would feel comfortable hitting the road on a long trip without first investing some money in some upgrades for the TV, by then, why not just get a 2500?

In the end, the truck can pull the TT but it doesn't sound like (with the concerns you have already) you would feel very comfortable doing it.

Yeah - covered storage would be the ideal solution if it wasn't too expensive. Sitting outside is tough on an RV - whether its in FLA or MI, the sun and the elements do take their toll over time.

My parents were also snowbirds who bought a (park model) trailer in Florida and kept it stored there until they returned after Christmas. If you don't intend to use the camper in MI, it's definitely something to consider. You could even take the car south and save even more on fuel than feeding the pickup all winter.

As for outdoor storage, you could buy an ADCO cover for it if that's a concern.

x2 buying if Florida.

If you are not going to use the TT other than here in Fl. that would be a good alternative. Where are you staying in Fl? I can give you names of a couple of good dealers that you could order from if you don't want a 2014 that has been sitting on the lot for several months. One is a Rockwood Dealer and the other Flagstaff. Let me know and i can pm you the details

I have an 832IKBS that is supposed to come off the line 6-19 and did not even put a deposit on it. Dealer already ordered it for stock and we made the changes we wanted.

He does have an 831FLSS 2014 in stock. Here is the link:

You could also choose to leave it in FL for a couple winters and save up to upgrade your truck to a 3/4 ton to pull the larger trailer back to MI.

So, I am sure if you buy it local and after a short trip locally, you decide it is too much for you, a nice forum member might be willing to tow it to FL for ya!

Our last trailer was a Sunny Brook 267FL with a GVWR of 11300 lbs and a dry weight of 6400 lbs, we towed it many times to Florida from Southern Ontario, we used chevrolet avalanches, had two during the length of time we had the trailer, six years, the avalanche is just the same as your half ton, 5.3, 3.42 rear end, the trailer was a box but the avs towed it fine, you new it was there but that is so for all gas powered trucks. Buy the one you want you will be in no rush to get there so you don't need to worry about pushing the truck to it's limit, see you in Florida in the winter.

Wow there is some great folks on this forum lots of info and help thanks to all who have responded. I am going to cancel the deposit I currently have on the 831FlSS and do some more research. This is something we want to get right.
