Can my SUV tow this safely?
Here's your answer.
Here's the back story.
we had two forest on both our sides my husband moved over so a semi could pass it created a gust of wind that made us sway hard. We had a blue ox and was only going 60. We were slightly under weight probably was one mistake and letting the semi pass us was another lesson learned we got a 5th wheel with a dually now.

I shake my head every time I'm on the highway at at least a couple people who have no clue about how to tow.

Wow, that's too bad. Sifting through the grammar I don't get the "We were slightly underweight" part nor the "We had two forest on both our sides". If you're underweight then you should be ok and the road with two forests doesn't appear like it would affect anything. Something was wrong with their setup or vehicles if they had an anti sway hitch and lost control at 60 mph.

I must be missing the point of this. Is it that everyone should have a 5th wheel and a dually? Never tow with an SUV? Never let a semi pass?
There are no facts given on the set up other than "We had a blue ox". A forest on each side? Have no idea why that is relevant.
I am guessing that SUV could tow my 4000 pound trailer with no issues.

There's no way your SUV could tow that! You need a 7500 duelly Diesel of course...

I think that it lends to the fact that if your tow vehicle can safely haul your trailer down the road or not.
You shouldn't sway that much that when a tractor trailer passes you that you roll your tv and trailer.

So it has to be the TV and could not be that the sway control or trailer were not setup correctly. Or that when the trailer started to sway that they did something to make it worse (ie hit the brakes), if what people say on this site about the correct size TV, I should be seeing a trailer crash every time I go camping. On my summer trip (that I passed many trailers being towed by TV's that some people on this forum would say are sure to crash) I did not see one crash.

50% of the rigs I see at the campsite are due a wreck at any moment according to many on the forums. Yet, I've never seen one wrecked in all my travels. And can only even find a handful of images of them on the web. Seems to be one of those things that is blown out of proportion.

I think over the last few years my stance on the weight police has changed slightly. I also see 50% (or more) of vehicles out there that should not be towing what they are towing. I see it as a chance of a wreck (small chance), but more so ending the life of the TV well before its time due to breakage and wearing out of parts. I also look at it as a legal side as well because I choose to follow the law not because I am afraid of DOT. Sometimes, however, I also have to question what the HECK were they thinking!

Although they happen for a number of reasons most of what I hear about are not like the one in the pics. Most are hit from the side or rear by other vehicles. All are not the fault of others ~~ like having 20' hanging into the lane turning from. I pull about 5K miles annually and try to keep ALL left turns at a traffic light.

Easy question: What's your Payload sticker on the driver door post Maximum Load? Easy answer: I hauled 2 skids of stone probably about 4,000 lbs. (F250) didn't bottom out, by the way where is the Payload sticker?? How many dealers know where the Payload Sticker is but don't care? Many 1/2 ton pickups can tow 7 - 9,000 but the hitch weight is 700 - 900 (this is Payload). If your Max PL is 1,650 - tongue is 900 (brochure dry weight), you have 750 for people and gear. Many TT in the 7 - 9 range can carry 1,200 - 2,300 gear then the gross is 8,200 - 11,300 (820 - 1,130 tongue), good idea to plan on the gross weight. Look what happened to the payload.

I bet he has felt the white knuckles before. When he said he shouldn't have let the truck pass. So his hitch setup needed some help. More pressure on the side of the trailer over the friction in the hitch. If he would have a bigger truck or a better hitch . He would have been fine. I see posts with people with 3/4 ton trucks with the cheapest hitches they have no problems at all. The truck makes up for the hitch. But a SUV with a big trailer and a cheap hitch . White knuckles !! Some people can drive better than others and never have a problem with a bad setup. The person does make a difference in the setup.

One thing that I believe to be missing is "certification by the manufacturer" of persons who install and give instruction to customers regarding WD hitches. Most dealerships I am aware of have NO ONE who truly knows solutions to WD hitch problems.
I detest more rules and laws as much as anyone, however if a dealer were required to have a certified person on staff to install and instruct on WD hitches most of these accidents would never happen.
Just my $.02 worth!
