Well, the quality of the ride of a 2500/3500 can be helped by running lower tire pressures. The tire makers will usually provide load pressure charts that show recommended PSI based on actual axle weight. This is why, when empty, I will run 50 front and 45 rear, whereas when loaded up I will run 60 front 70 rear on my 2500.

Having too much towing is a bit like having too much money. There is a point where more is really unnecessary but it's fun to have around anyways.

Um, just to throw a wrench into things, have you looked at the Nissan NV 3500 passenger van. Looking at payload and tow specs, may fit your needs.

Safe and happy travels.

having too much truck

I have never seen one since but one time late 1990s early 2000s Ford had a sale for employees at a plant in Connorsville In with a pick-up with Six door extended cab dually all dressed out. I was making deliveries and when I told a co-worker he did not believe me either so I let hi make the deliveries the next day. Neither one of us had the nerve to look at the sticker. But for must of us that more than likely would be TOO MUCH TRUCK.

If you go to this site and click on Look up my vehicle, it gives the payload and tow capacity. I simply copy VIN from trucks I am considering. The numbers vary, so I assumed it was accurate for that particular truck.
that is accurate. I checked my vin and many of the rams I look at.

I've been amazed by how many different ways these trucks can come equipped. It may seem like you order with the Big Horn/Lone Star package ( or some other trim ), and one truck should be just like the next. But not so. So, when you order, be very sure of the options that are included. Tow mirrors can be nice, or a PITA if you need to park in narrow places. Some cab configurations allow the center arm rest storage to convert into a 3rd front seat position. Others do not. Not positive, but I believe some base models do not include a back up camera. I very much recommend one of those. I've seen trucks with no parking sensors, some with only sensors on the back, and some with front & back. I recommend front & back. These trucks are tall. Been driving mine 1.5 years, and I still have trouble estimating the distance to cars in the parking spot opposite me. The front sensors help. And yea, get the 4X4.

I shared this thread with my wife and her response was 'you can never be too rich, too thin, or too tan" Unfortunately, we we don't fit into any of those. Lol.

My theory is always buy a TV planning two RVs ahead unless you're 80 years old.

Doesn't work if you plan to downsize after the kids are gone!

Oh yes it does! If you have a 1 ton that was in anticipation of going bigger and then changed your mind and went smaller, it will still work great. Just like some of us like using 3/4 ton pickups to pull around even trailers in the 5000-6000 lb category. Just plain does it better.

If one is strictly towing and not using TV for commuting, then having a larger vehicle would make sense. My 1/2 ton is well suited for my current use...70 mile daily commute with 4-5 camping trips/year. Considering usage and current TT, a 3/4 or 1 ton would be way overkill in my case. So, yes, there are cases where you can indeed have too much TV.

Retiring in 22 months, 5 days (but who's counting? ) and the commuting days will be over. Planning to trade the 1/2 ton then...we'll see what the future holds when we get there...

Yeah, I suppose. I don't really have a daily commute, in that I use my company vehicles once I leave the house. Good to be the king. For all the times we do have to run around, the Caddy CTS does the trick.

That CTS was a killer buy. 2006, loaded to the gills, and we bought it two years ago for about $8K. Had only 51,000 miles on it. Was hardly ever driven (about 5K a year) and kept garaged. Looks like a new vehicle. And now that it is over 10 years old, tags are a joke. $50 a year.

Kids are gone and NOW we find our 43' 5er the most comfortable of all. Why downsize? You earned comfort, especially after the kids are on their own.

Downsizing would allow us to camp in some places we can’t anymore because our 32’ TT is just too long to fit in the sites at those parks. It may or may not happen but without the kids I could be comfortable in an R-Pod! Of course, we’re more likely to move to a 32’ 5er next. I can confidently say we’ll never have a 43’ long trailer. That’s insanely big for the wooded Provincial Parks where we like to camp and we’ll never be full timers.

Just a side note on the question of "too much truck" I used to have a Jayco hybrid and stamped into the the frame of the trailer tongue it said something like Caution - do not to with a vehicle rated greater than 1 ton.
I never looked into the reasoning because it didn't effect me, but apparently the trailer frame manufacturer thought you could have too much truck :-D
