Carrying a Heavy Hitch?

Hi Folks,

Before I reinvent the wheel, I thought I'd ask around for advice. My folks loved our Rockwood MiniLite so much that they went and bought a Surveyor.

The main issue is that the day they were moving onto the camper to become full-timers, Dad had a nasty stroke. He's recovering nicely and is (miraculously) nearly 100% (save for some balance issues). So the bulk of the lifting/setup/takedown is up to Mom.

She's 5'1" and weighs 100 lbs soaking wet.

They have a kickin' brand new Dodge Durango for towing, which includes the super-duper, killer VERY heavy trailer hitch that, of course, can be slid off fairly easily.

They want to be able to remove the hitch A) avoid the nasty WHACKS that come of hitting it during regular use of the Durango; and B) because they've got dogs popping in and out of the Durango and they don't want the hitch left on; C) and they simply don't want it sticking out.

So...on to my question. Is there something someone has already made to assist in the lifting/carrying of ridiculously heavy hitches when not attached to tow vehicle or trailer? If so, got a link?

I learn so much just by reading all of your posts and I'm hoping someone has a great idea.

Thanks,
Polly

A few years ago someone here made a nifty little cradle for their hitch. Hopefully that person will pipe in here soon. I will search for a bit to see if I can find it.

Remove the receiver pin and pull away it will stay hooked to the trailer.

I do just that all the time and have my wife guide me back and guide the hitch into the receiver. That is the easiest way plus you can spin the hitch under the ball mount so you don't bust your shins....

Thanks everyone! I think they'll do what some of you (and I) suggested and leave it hanging in place and spin it. I, on the other hand, just ordered that nifty Hitch Grip. Thanks!! I knew you all would know.

Whenever I have a trailer/Camper question or idea, my partner always says, "Ask the fella's on the Forum, I'm sure someone's already invented that."

X-3 Just use the jack to line it up vertically. Helps to keep hitch from walking off also.
Speedy recovery

If you do this, make sure to get your Mom a lock for the trailer tongue, so the hitch doesn't wonder off some night!
