Every time I go over a bridge or highway that makes me "Hobbyhorse" up and down, I go into an instant sweat worrying about something breaking loose. There is sooo much more weight put on the hitch from that up and down motion, I'm sure it is way over max weight limits. I've seen it so bad that I expected the front wheels to come off the ground before I could slow down to a non-resonant speed.

Indeed, the consequences of this failure occurring at speed are unthinkable.

My gawd..,. this is exactly where one does not want see bad welding epitomized!

Did your safety chains do what they were designed to do?

E-brake cable activated?

Still have the failed parts? If so you should be thinking of pinging the NHTSA. Especially given that the part is only three yrs old. The Equal-i-zer WDH systems are popular. There could be any number of impending disasters out there in the RV community.

Like others have said thank goodness everyone is OK! Things can be replaced, loved one and other folks cannot!!!

This should also serve as a reminder to everyone that they should inspect their hitches and safety equipment regularly, no matter the type or brand!!!

the ball mount appears to have rifted from bottom to top. the bolts would pretty much have to have sheared, or else the ball mount would have remained in compression against the shank...no??

The weld was cracked for a long time as the weld was almost completely rust, only a small portion was still connected. The 3/4 " bolts sheared off when the weld failed. The hitch was 3.5 yrs old.

We couldn't move as the electric jack and front stabilizer were bent and there was no way to raise the trailer. The police arrived and blocked off the road as we were taking up both lanes. Coach Net got us towed to a safe location for the night.

Fortunately we were barely moving, we were making a left turn out of a parking lot when it happened. We had just driven 350 miles on the interstate. Had this happened at 65 we may have not survived an 8,000 lb trailer swinging us around in traffic.

The next morning Equalizer customer service found a replacement head 100 miles away and a dealer that would swap it out.

The morale of the story is to inspect your Equalizer brand hitch very carefully. Even the dealer that remounted this one didn't use anything but an air gun, nothing was torqued. Equalizer makes you responsible, but the dealers are the ones that are doing the setups.
Can you back out the camera and send a better photo? It's so close it's hard to tell where it broke. Maby a side/top/or front view about a foot away?
Thanks,
