Changed My Fuel Filter on the Truck

So I had to do my first real maintenance on the truck for the year I owned it.. Chevy so kindly did all my oil changes the last year (now that is over though.. but oh well).

I decided to do my own fuel filter, it was a year old so I figured it could not hurt. I have to say it was VERY easy. Used an AC Delco replacement. The only thing I did not like is the O-ring would not lock into the channel. It did once screwed into place but I was nervous it would walk out of the channel when threading in. Might try another brand next time to see if it is different.

Other than the 20 screws to drop the fender well it was a 1/2 hour job. I did make one oops.. I did not realize how much fuel stayed in between the filter and the water sensor. I dumped the filter and began to unscrew the sensor when I dumped diesel all over the work bench. Won't do that again...

I've owned mine since Jan 30th and have not had to change the fuel filter yet. I watched a few videos and the big complaint was the fender. My truck has about 132k miles and I am the second owner.

Chevy says in the manual 22500 miles, two years or when the DIC says so.. I got almost all of the milage but 70% on the gauge. It was not hard. I do not know what Chevy charges but I am sure more than 37$ and a half hour of time.

Continue to use the OE filter, it is a good quality filter. As far as how often, depends on fuel quality, I have over 2 years on mine, when I changed it I cut it open, it still had plenty of life left.

I have 4 years and 33000 mi on mine and still shows 25% filter life remaining am going to change in near future as it is due for an oil change.

I used to worry about time/miles in reference to the fuel filter. Now I just wait until the DIC starts yelling. I did have to replace the fuel filter body at about 90k as it started sucking air from cracks on the top and losing prime.

I have been using the WIX filter as it has a tapered shape which makes it easier to get in and out from the top. Which I can do on my 2007 classic w/o having to remove anything.

It's nice saving yourself about $100 by doing it yourself

Added this fuel filter access door on my 2014 which makes changing the filter almost a breeze.... I usually dab a bit of Vaseline petroleum jelly on the o-ring and that holds it in place.

What dimensions did you use to make the access door? Where did you measure from or did you just eyeball it? Getting ready to do my first filter change and am not looking forward to pulling down the inner fender well.

So on the newer trucks 14 and we have found that you don't need to remove the liner to replace the filter. Just reach under and remove it.

I also did an access door for the fuel filter, i bought an aftermarket inner fender well for about 35 bucks cut a section out then cut a section just a bit smaller then got some plastic
screw clips to use to fasten them togather, worked great. Then traded that truck now im in the same boat i have one year left on my dealer servicebefor backmto doing them myself

The dimensions are 8" X 5" but if you look close at the picture you'll see that the left side is curved to the contours of the 2011 - 2014 chevy fender well. The same year GMC's have a different fender well.

I bought the door online at MADJACK so there was no measuring. Just traced and carefully cut the hole about an inch in from the marks.

They have them for every GM truck model year.

Last year on vacation I changed the filter 4 times in 600 miles . Finally got tired of taking the inner fender out and back in , so I threw in the bed of the truck . Needless to say I was getting good @ changing them .

Nice and neat job . They should do this from the factory .

You mentioned trying a different brand, but I used parker racor (delco) on my duramax to 200k miles and not even one hiccup with the fuel system. I highly suggest sticking with parker and saving $10-15 not paying for ac Delco name.
