Chevrolet Silverado Steering Issue

Just a heads up for anyone using a Silverado as a TV. First, don't get me wrong, I love my truck and its doing its job. This is more of a warning. If you get steering resistance while performing a slow speed turn such as in a parking lot; take your truck to the dealer ASAP.

In August, we started feeling the tiniest "pop". I wasn't even sure it had happened at first. After about 3 episodes over several months, I took it in but local dealer in October who said nothing wrong. Fast forward to December and it is now predictable and can be caused at will. Took it back to another dealer and they opened up the steering assist system and sampled fluid. Its full of metal shavings. The pump and gear box are basically destroying themselves.

If we had continued, we would have been cruising down the interstate with 13000 LB on our tail, gone to pull into a Cracker Barrel or some such place; made a right turn on an exit ramp, the steering would have locked and lost half our braking. Our next thought would be "I don't remember parking upside down cross ways on the interstate"

Come to learn that there is a TSB and is apparently one step away from becoming a full blown recall. It will be fixed as warranty work. It has nothing to do with mileage or usage, it is a parts/design failure.

Thanks for posting the info. Mine was repaired when I took it in for service as they had the TSB. I always ask if there are any pending issues when I take my truck in. Later RJD

Will look for number associated with mine but affects multiple years. Mine is 2014. Not sure if one TSB for multiple model years or what.

Yep... I'm also interested.
The TSB Mr Havercamp listed for headlight issues covered multiple years.

Chevrolet Silverado Steering Issue

May be #3386. Mine felt like a small pop initially. As time wore on, pops worked up to 2-3 second steering lock ups. Don't think it's specific to 2500s.

On the Chevy forums, the steering issue is a big issue. It looks to be for both the 2500 and 3500. Not sure how far back it goes, but a big problem with the 2016's. This is the first I have read about the locking up, as most are for excess play. There is a redesigned steering box out now (at least a new part#), that people are putting on. Some of the fixes and TSB's have been for loose adjusting screw or loose pitman arm. I had them loctite my adjusting screw on my 2500 (per a TSB), and so far no problems. I am also not a fan of the electronic steering assist. Much rather not have it.

TSB's for both 2016 2500 and 3500 (I am sure not a complete list):

PIT5501B, PIT5501A and SB-16-NA-109

A number of people are making sure NHTSA is well aware of the problem as Chevy is doing the normal minimum fix possible.

Good website for checking TSB's on Chevy's: http://www.chevroletproblems.com/tsbs/

Agreed lots of different issues re steering. This is definitely pump/gearbox related.

The SB doesn't show up on the NHTSA's website, at least not yet.

I have a 2016 Silverado 3500 HD Duramax Dually. The truck had 4800 miles on it when I found a slight drip under the engine compartment. After checking I found fluid on the pitman arm. Dealer said there was a T.S.B. that called for replacing the shaft but that they were on B.O. from G.M. About 3 weeks later they replaced the PS gear, Pitman shaft. As soon as I got behind the wheel leaving the dealer I found that the steering was much tighter. My previous truck was a 2012 Chev 2500 HD gas engine and I found no problems with that trucks steering.

Guess I win - no recalls listed at all for my truck, with 50,000 + miles. I also think I have electric steering

A TSB is not as high up the chain as a recall. Most likely, an owner will get a notification about a recall... but you have to dig up TSBs yourself. I had a TSB corrected on my truck 3-4 weeks ago only because I saw info. on it here. I received no notification from GMC - and when I got it fixed, I had to state what was my issue before they would fix it.

How can this be??? Chevy claims JD Power says the Silverado is tops in New Car Reliability!

Oh, wait - as soon as you drive it off the lot, it's not a new car anymore!

(Good thing I didn't buy based on JD Power!)

Ok so I work for GM and looked up the TSB. It is #PIT5501D. Only applies to 2016 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500/3500. Does not effect other models or years of trucks. Have only ever seen 1 of these in our shop. Steering feels loose when driving was the customer's concern.

Googled the TSB and came up with this (Post #41):
