2500 hd
I love my 2009 2500 hd .in looking into the 2015 models they can pull a trailer rated at 14500 lbs. I run back and forth to florida from Pittsburgh pa. I have the 6.0 with 4:10 rears, it pulls the appalacian mountains in wv without slowing down a heartbeat.

I have a 2500 with 5.7l hemi. It tows my 6000lb bumper pull just fine and even though its rated for 8500lbs I wouldn't go over 7000lbs partially because with the mega cab and 6.5 foot bed the truck is 6300lbs by itself and then I add 4 people, bikes, kayaks, firewood, cast iron cookwear and all the other food and gear needed maintain my rep as a chronic over packer. Stability wise you would probably be fine with 2500 but the gas engine is going to be working hard to move the weight your talking about especially if climbing is involved. Just my opinion.

Rumor mill is Ford is launching a V8 Ecoboost with the 2017 or 2018 mustang, raptor, and SD. Imagine 450hp and 500lbs of torque from 2400-5800 rpm. If done properly, it could change the face of the Gas HD segment and finally bridge the gap between too much and not quite enough...

Engines for the 2017 SuperDuty have already been announced and there isn't a Ecco Boost in the line up. We could be doing pre orders on 2017 in 7 or 8 months if like this 2016.

I did not get into RVing either to recoup just use common sense as to what works and cost effective. Later RJD

But that is not was the title of the thread is. Stick to the question. If he wanted to know he would have asked. Kind of like other forums I've been on gets derailed cause someone always thinks things are better. One person starts out asking question about electric locos and the next thing you got folks saying how much better battery operations. Later RJD

Thx for the info.

I purchased a '12 GMC Serra duramax new, it has 20,000 miles on it and coming back from PA (not towing) I got an over all average of 22.8 mpg, there were sections I check it and was getting upwards to 26.8 mpg. towing is normally 12-13. Love that truck! And not 1 warranty problem unlike the Ford 6.0 that I traded in - engine had 3 blown head gaskets, and always had injector problems. Stay away from Ford 6.0.

Owned a Chevy 2500 gas and traded it in for two reasons. The gas mileage loaded or empty was awful... 6-8 mph towing and 10 to 12 empty. Got an F250 Diesel and now get 17-20 empty on trips and 14-15 towing. But more importantly, the difference in towing is night and day and much or stable in terms of suspension and braking.

Don't know much about GM or Ram, but I've got a Crusader 320 rlt that is similar in size and I pull it with a Ford F350 Super Duty, 6.8L V10 gasser. Does the towing job very well. Regardless of what you pick, don't expect much in the way of mileage.

I've had two different diesel vehicles and two different V-10 gassers all pulling campers in my 20+ years. While the V-10's did OK pulling they did not compare to the diesels, especially on hills or in the mountains. Mileage between the gassers and diesels isn't even in the same ballpark. If you can afford the diesel and will be pulling a lot, it is worth it.

The trailer will be a 5th wheel.
The Diesel for around $50k but I can get the big V8 for $44K. Help!

I think this was the question. Don't see where diesels comes into play here. Later RJD

Regarding your truck decision
I have a 2015 Silverado 1500 Max trailer pack truck and pulled a 12000 lb rated toy hauler (actual trailer weight 11000lbs.) You mentioned limited trailer pulling
which is pretty much what I do, did one trip of about 1000 miles round and plenty under 200 miles
5.3 pulled it well fuel economy towing around 8, fuel economy solo higher than 18/23 works well for my needs smoother riding also

I have had 454 GMC dually and Chev gas
I now have diesel. The power is crazy better than gas. My gas mileage is 2 1/2 miles per gallon better with diesel.
That's saves lots of money on our budget. The up charge was $7,400 getting diesel. In my humble option well worth it especially when considering the longevity of Diesel engines.

Can't compare an older rat and it's drrivetrain to the modern gas plants any more than you can compare a 12V cummins to a 6.7.
