It was just messin with ya. If you read up on what all they had to do in order to pull that stunt off it was ridiculous.
Basically they rigged it so there was 0 weight from the shuttle being transferred to the truck, and all the truck had to do was get the shuttle moving on a flat surface. Even at that they had to load the bed down with weight and lower the tire pressure to generate grip so it could actually get movement. Not realistic but made for a gimicky picture.

I'm not going to say that it's cheaper to maintain a diesel, but it's not as bad as some people are saying.
My truck is an 07' Duramax with 83,000 miles. In 9 years the only part that has failed is one glow plug. I change my oil twice a year and fuel filter once a year. I do it myself, so no labor charges.
Oil: 5 gallons per year at $12.00 per gallon= $60.00
Oil filter: 2 per year at $8.00 each= $16.00
Fuel filter: 1 per year at $33.00
So it costs me $109.00 per year to maintain my diesel. Nowhere near $400.00
I could replace all 8 injectors with high performance injectors for under $3,000. Once again, nowhere near $10,000
I could replace my CP3 injection pump with a stroker pump for $2,000. Not $4,000.
My truck doesn't have a DPF or SCR system on it, but if it did I would just delete it for around $1,200. And once more, not $3,000.
I get so tired of hearing all the gas vs. diesel threads. People have their reasons for what they buy. Me personally, I towed with a gasser and HATED IT!!!!! People say to just slow down and enjoy the trip because you're on vacation. For me, I can't enjoy the trip if I am constantly trying to maintain speed. I live in an area where I have to climb a hill no matter where I go.
So, if you are ok with fighting the hills, or you live where you don't have to pull a lot steep grade, and you can't do your own work, then by all means, buy a gasser.

I have always believed if you want a truck to make short trips back & forth to work,,, Gas would be your best choice !!! If you plan to hit the road and do a lot of towing,, then Diesel would be the right choice !!!

Using the same 4000 miles of towing and using 9.4 for gas and 11 for diesel (mine normally get 12.5) that still 62 gals less fuel for diesel. Even figuring the gas at 2.15 a gallon and diesel at 2.35 gal 78 bucks difference in just 4000 miles of towing and Ford has diesel oil changes for 59.00 and 89.00 including tire rotation. I don't use any additives other than DEF so the price would be less than Big Mac meal. Small price for 440 HP and 865 LBS of torque.

I guess you had a Ford gas. My chevy does not mention I have to change by 6 months it goes by mileage. I can also go by the oil life monitor but guess what anybody that wants to go that long on oil changes be my guest. I change oil oftener and prevent failures with good PM. Most folks may not change there own oil so it does get expensive for a diesel. So what is the price you add for the DEF which is suppose to be added every oil change.?
BTW when fuel prices start to rise guess who will be paying the biggest price for fuel Diesel. Later RJD

But I still don't understand why gas would be the best choice for short commutes. I drive my diesel 7 miles to work and 7 miles home 5 days a week. In 9 years it hasn't caused an issue.
And I'm still not saying a diesel is better than gas. Just want to make that clear.

Diesel in northern parts gets really pricey with blend and additives to help prevent gelling here pretty quick. Some owners run stanadyne year round.

I was always told that a diesel needs to run for awhile to get the 15 quarts of oil warm up in the winter otherwise you'll blow the motor. So my 5mile commute wouldn't be healthy for the motor... and I'm not going to sit in the truck for 30mins after work waiting for the oil to warm up so I can drive 10mins home.

DEF is 4.00 gallon at the pump so 20 bucks to fill the 5 gal tank.
Diesel EPA standards jump causing the price diesel to cost more than gas, if you remember right, it was cheaper for years. Now is 2017 gas has to have the same standards as diesel has had for years, we see what happens.
Why would Ford/Chevy extend the oil changes if it causes problems? Anyway, for the next 100,000 miles I have the stamp in my book for doing oil changes according to the DIC my warranty is covered. I will trade before it gets to 100,000 miles anyway - heck the new 2017 Fords have caught my eye.
Last year when towed about 700 miles with a friend in gas and us in diesel at each fill up I put 5 to 8 gals less fuel in mine them him. He was towing a lot lighter then I was....

Once again, I drive 7 miles to work, 7 miles home. 9 years and 83,000 miles, my truck still hasn't "blown up". I hear that all the time, yet I've never met anyone that has had their diesel "blow up" because of their short commute.
My Duramax is 10 qts. My last gasser was 7 qts. Not much difference there. If it's below freezing, I plug it in. No waiting around then. Plus, I can plug my truck in at work too.

Now they have fast heat option that the heater will blow warm air before you can back it out the garage and that's without plugging it in.

I don't have the option of plugging in at work. I have to park in the middle of nowhere.

Hey.. Don't shoot the messenger.
I'm just going by what I have personally worked on.
I made a good living with the 6.0L power stroke.
I'm not stupid enough not to know.. It can be done cheaper.
Dealer work is expensive....
