Chevy 8.1

Decided to look at a 2500 truck to replace the Tundra.
Read too many weight threads i guess.

Saw a '05 chevy longbed with a 8.1 engine and a 3.73 rear end.

Any thoughts on that engine?

Tons of power that will pass anything but a gas station.

Boss's gets about 8-9 regardless of pulling or not.

My boss has an 01 8.1 and uses plenty of oil.
Gm states it's "normal" usage.

About 4 qts in between oil changes of 5,000 miles.

I'd definitely ask the previous owner if the one your looking at is any different.

Good engine, there was so problems with some of them assembled with bad rings hence the oil usuage on some of them; Probably twice as strong as a 6.0 and almost the same fuel mileage

they had some intake issues early on as well sucking oil out of the lifter valley but I think that was cleared up in 02

never owned one but know 3 people that have had them and they loved the power, it was the mpg's they couldn't get past. all three got diff mpg's and I don't know what gear ratio's they had. all three of them now own duramax diesels though, but never heard them complain about reliablilty.

I own a 06 avalanche 2500 with the 8.1. Power is great and mileage is same as 6.0 so go for the big engine. No replacement for displacement. Mine does not use any oil, gets about 14mpg on highway and about 8mpg pulling my 7500 lb trailer

Looks like some good and some not so. Ill check to see if i can get owners contact info. Not excited about mileage comments. Tundra is 14 around town, 18 on the highway with a cover on it and 10 or better towing. The bigger the engine.....

Thanks for your comments.

I had an 8.1 in my 2002 Avalanche. It pulled great. I got 10mpg around town, and about 8 towing. The oil was down around a quart between 3000 mile oil changes. Sold it at 100,000 miles with no problems ever experienced.

If you are worried about mileage go with a used diesel. You will thank yourself later.

Bottom line, if you're worried about mileage, forget camping and pulling any trailer or driving a MH...

Very true OC. If you want good mileage sell the truck and trailer and buy a Prius!!!!!

That is a 500 CI engine. I would not expect good MPG and as it ages it will burn or leak some oil. My friend has one that he uses to pull a Bar-B-Que trailer and he claims that he gets about 7.5 MPG. He got it because he said that the diesel's cost to much. God Luck

Just sayin' that 8 is a jump down from 10. Means 25% more in gas money. Like paying $3.75 for gas instead of $3.00.

Maybe the diesel is the right thing to do.
