common misconception / air bags

Article I read this am worth posting.
Faq section material.

It is a common misconception that adding a load leveling suspension increases a vehicles carrying capacity
(Gvwr)
People put in air bags and think it increases load-carrying ability , but its the manufacture that determines that based on the axles, brakes, engine and other components.
Once that truck leaves the factory, its gvwr can never be changed!
Although adding air bags or air spring suspension won't legally (liability) allow your truck to carry more weight, installing one will level out your vehicle so it handles more like it does with a lighter load.

There is one thing that is not true in that article and that is that a vehicles GVWR can be changed if they proper channels are gone through.

What channels would that be?

Something that I'd add is airing the bags up to level the tow vehicle can be misleading when used with a weight distributing hitch. If the W/D hitch is sized and set-up properly, air bags are not required.

This is so true, however I have spoken with folks (both with WD and 5th wheels) who say that the airbags dampen bouncing on uneven roads.

Having experienced the "rough seas ride" on several of our nations interstates, they may be worth the price of admission just for that feature alone.

load leveling bags do just that......level your truck for the load your carrying...nothing more.

I will attest to the ability of "air bags" to significantly help the "porpoise-ing" effect some of our "million dollar" highways induce while yanking around 1200lbs tongue weight.....wd hitch or not! LOL....

with that said, you CAN throw off your wd hitch bars by putting too much pressure in teh bags....like with everything else in setting up a hitch, you have to account for all the little variables...including the use of bags when making adjustments....

And another misconception. An authorized upfitter is allowed to place a new GVWR sticker on a vehicle. Done all the time for certain commercial vehicles. It is expensive so most places will not get certified to do it, but it can be done.

i always wondered about that. The ONLY difference in an F250 and an F350 is the blocks they use in the back axle...the ones on a F350 are a little taller...

blocks = couple hundred dollars

new GVWR sticker = probably too much to consider!!

LOL

There are body builders and upfitters that are licensed to do this. The VIN number also has to be change sometimes depending on if you change the class of truck.
