If you have a Powerstroke you don't need one.

Cummins do.. they need all the help they can get.

Sorry.. I had to... :-p

that's what I figured I would hear.

So, recommendations on tranny coolers and radiators?

Never had a single hot trans temp problem with my 6.7 Cummins while living and towing out west. Do you have an actual problem with trans temp or are you just trying to avoid one?

Unless you’re having a problem already I wouldn’t worry and if you are having trans temp issues then the problem needs to be diagnosed and fixed instead of adding an aftermarket band-aid.

no I'm not actually having problems just looking to avoid.
not really sure the temps on the tranny.
sounds like you're having good luck with your Cummins

I don’t have it anymore but the 68RFE never blinked when towing through the Sierras. Trans temps never got over 180-185F.

You’ll be fine, but if you have an older 6.7 that doesn’t have the trans temp display option on the center screen you can invest in something like a ScanGauge II which will let you monitor trans temps via the OBD-II port. There are more expensive options like the Edge CTS2 and such, but if you just want a relatively inexpensive way to monitor things that the truck can’t display on its own then check out the ScanGauge II. I have one and it works well once configured.

the things you forget...LOL.
Actually I have an Edge CS Evolution, I'll look next time and check the tranny temps. Around here there's not anything to challenge this truck so I just never checked the temp.
thx

Even though it's a Ram w/ a Cummins I bet you're ok without one.

I think most of the time these HD trucks are pretty robust in the cooling Dept. When we took our camper out to the Canyon a year ago I didn't even see the trans temp move from normal.

Lots of friends in CA are pulling heavy with Dodge and no issues. Most stay our of Death Valley in the summer too! LOL

It can never hurt though.

i just called the local radiator shop looking for a HD upgrade. he said it didn't know if there was one and would have to build a bigger radiator. that
s not happening

Just depends on how deep your pockets are..

I don't see a trans cooler specific to this truck here. There are universal fit ones here though..

Plenty of other upgrades you can do too. Just empty every pocket.

I have close to 10 years of towing with a Mag-Hytec deep dish transmission oil pan on my 2008, Dodge 2500 HD 6. 7L Cummins truck. This fits the 68RFE transmission and adds extra oil and is an AL pan with fins to help in cooling. I have a tempeture probe in the pan with a dedicated gage. My tans is service every 60,000 miles with new oil and filters also.

I have towed out west in 90+ temps and my temperature in the pan have never been above 195F. My truck has a tune installed that adds 60HP/120lb-ft TQ over stock which is measured at the rear wheels so, the trans sees all of this additional power.

My only suggestion is too look into a Mag-Hytec deep dish oil pan for for your 68RFE Auto Transmission. You can purchase one from Geno's Garage which supports our Dodge/Ram Cummins trucks.

You didn't say what year your truck is, but looks like you have a 3rd gen in the pic so kind of comparing different trucks. We've towed in BC and Alberta over the Rockies and back in 37/38C (100F) weather and trans temp hardly moved, but our TT is fairly lightweight as well.

Ha! That’s because the power stroke doesn’t make much heat sitting at the garage!

For my F-150, I had both engine and transmission cooling problems. I had the larger factory transmission cooler, too.

Quite a lot of information online about the nature of additional transmission fluid capacity. Improvements are dubious, at best. For very short trips, there is more fluid to heat up, which takes longer ... you may run cooler. For longer trips, the fluid all heats up and the extra capacity doesn't do anything ... except make it take longer to cool back down. The fins and such don't do a thing. So, after extensive reading, I found very few reputable sources that would claim cooling improvements with Mag-Hytec or equivalent transmission pans. I'd pass.

I flushed my lines, changed my fluids out with a high quality synthetic, and added a second B&M cooler in series with my factory cooler. It was an easy project. Ordered the cooler. Purchased about $20 of fittings from my local Parker fittings outlet. Ran the lines. Mounted it in front of my radiator. Done.

If you go that path, it shouldn't be too difficult to plumb in.

It was all moot, though, as my F-150 just couldn't handle towing anything larger than a stout wheelbarrow.

Memes are so much funnier when they don't have egregious errors. Dodge hasn't made a truck in 10 years. Power Stroke is two words. It's not that difficult to get these things right.

Eh.. it's still a Dodge.. or a Chrysler/Fiat and now even a Peugeot! Maybe someone should tell Chrysler that Yugo might be up for grabs!

Can't wait to see the memes on that one.
