Coupler lock

Looking for some advice on a coupler lock. Just bought the Reese one at wal mart and it doesn't fit. Coupler to wide. So any ideas out there.

I used an old 2-5/16 ball, cut the shank off, stuck it in the coupler and used a regular Master Lock on the latch after I drilled it out.

If you just lock the hitch, someone can just use a small ball and hook up and pull off, but if you lock the hitch with a ball filling the socket, that isn't possible. That's why I cut the shank off. Used that method for over 30 yrs.

What do you use to cut the shank off? That must be pretty hardened steel

I got mine from Lowe's. It had the padlock, the ball, and the receiver pin.

I had to run a drill bit through the coupler latch hole on one trailer.

On the other trailer, the ball lock only fits if I put it on backwards.

You could also look at one of those motorcycle cable wheel locks.

Slideout1961, I have a vertical and horizontal bandsaws, but the first one I just used a hacksaw. The last one I used the horizontal bandsaw and put it in my lathe and put a finish cut on it.

Lock the coupler in the open position. They can get it but won't get far. Grade 70 transport chain through the wheels works too.

Oh ya, unlock your neighbors trailer!

If someone really wants it they'll get it. It's merely a deterrent.

Locking in the open position won't stop them, if they have a wd hitch, the bars will hold it on the ball even with it open. How do I know, had it happen when I didn't check on our boys when they hooked up our 2nd trailer. Towed 180 miles on I80 in Iowa and never knew it. Got home and started to unhook and just about fainted when I discovered it. From then on, I latched and padlocked it.

Is this the yellow one from Reese?

Disclaimer: Lack of proper product and/or parts names in following feedback.
On mine it's a tight fit but works. The slider thing needs to be in the open position while placing the U-shape piece on the cupler and inserting the yellow piece with the ball shape thing. Once I lock it in place the slider is moved down to close position.

There is some adjusting the U-shape piece for it to fit on the coupler. I have trouble reading which side of the coupler gets the grooves side or not.
