Crusader 295 rst 2013 Fifth Wheel

Does anyone have any info on towing this rv with a 2009 F-150? My owners manual says it has a towing capacity of 11,300. The rv weighs approx. 9,000 empty. I want to buy this rv and am researching if i need a bigger truck.

Absolutely you need a bigger truck!

It's not towing capacity that matters for RV's. It's pin weight (or tongue weight) compared to your Cargo Carrying Capacity (GVWR - weight of truck and passengers and other cargo). Rear GAWR must be considered as well.

For a 5er, the pin weight will be between 15% and 25% of the LOADED weight (not dry weight). For this trailer, that's .25 * 11900 = 2975 pounds. Oh, and don't forget about the weight of the 5th wheel hitch.

Could an F-150 pull it? Probably, with great effort. Could a 1/2 ton truck stop it safely? No.

Highly recommend a 3/4 ton or bigger for the 295RST. In fact; most here will advise not to pull any 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton truck. Many threads on this topic...

Trailer should stop the same whether 1/2T or 3/4T, I would definitely not put that much pin wt in any 1/2T or 3/4T.

I have a 2013 295RST and have had it weighed. The trailer weight is 10,500# loaded for camping with a 2,000# pin weight. I pull it with a 3/4 ton GMC. Total for truck and trailer is 17,500#.

Most reasonable folks would agree that a larger truck with beefier brakes and sturdier frame will stop a large trailer much more comfortably and safely than the 1/2 ton counterpart. Most 3/4 ton (and larger) truck owners will attest that a downhill 'panic stop' from 55 mph or so is uncomfortable at best. That large trailer will control the smaller truck in a similar panic stop scenario.

Based on the responses to your inquiry, the trailer you are considering is too much for a 1/2 ton truck. Consider your family's safety and the safety of fellow travelers. Matching the trailer's profile to the TV's designed capabilities/specs are important parts of the buying process. Once you've purchased, get used to the pulling/driving experience; then hit the road and have some fun...

Sound advice here.

Buy the trailer!, but get a 3/4 ton truck to tow it with. You won't be sorry.

Forget the 3/4 ton and go right to the 1 ton. Not much difference in cost and even with a 3/4 ton you'll be pushing payload and next you'll be asking about airbags or sleeper springs. I speak from experience.

I pull my 295 with a 2014 Ram 2500 HD 6.4 hemi and it barely squats at all when hitched. We have taken trips thru New Mexico, Colorado, and Arkansas without any
issues. I had a 3500 diesel pulling a Sierra at about 13,000lbs and I think the 6.4 has almost the same power (my opinion) and I saved almost $6000 getting the hemi.

The Hemi is a lot lighter than the Cummins and that weight savings in the engine goes straight to increased payload. So as long as your comfortable with the pulling power of the Hemi vs the Cummins, and it sounds like you are, then that increased payload will really help out with less squat.
We had a 2008 Ram 2500, CTD and pulled a 26' Cougar X-Lite and it pulled great but it did squat a bit. When I hit the scales I was over the GVWR for the truck by about 500#. I was fine with that but we decided to get a larger 5er, 2015 Mountaineer, and sold the Ram and got a 2011 F350. Pulls like a dream and no squat. Haven't hit the scales yet but I think I will be close but OK on GVWR
