Cummins premium

I'm currently looking at 2 trucks:

2016 F250 CCSB Powerstroke Lariat

2016 Ram 2500 Cummins Laramie

The MSRP is within $250 or each other. However, the Ram is coming in about $3,500 more than the Ford after discounts.

The question is...is the Cummins worth the premium over the Powerstroke?

Honest opinion is nope. The cummins is a good motor but I have seen way to many issues with a Dodge and I will never own another but that is my opinion as a former Dodge owner and technician. You have to decide if it is worth it to you.

You'll get a thousand responses to your question. Bottom line, you have to make that decision. Each manufacturer has their pros and cons. Do your homework and make the decision that is best for you. I have a 2011 Ram CTD and have had no issues with it and absolutely love it. First Ram I have ever had. Good luck with your choice and happy camping.

Thats cruel but funny! I think the ford has a better ride however I sure like the cummins engine.

I owned 1 Dodge pickup, gas Dakota. Great Truck. Up here the Dodge is very popular with contractors as the dealer gives out loaners when they break, contractors need a truck to work. I find the Ram noisier and the DW did not like the interior. We settled on the F 250 Powerstroke, Chevy a close second for me.

at Goshen I saw a lot of Dodge Trucks, old and new. In the end you can get a lemon no matter what you have.

Personal Preference, what you like and most of all service, Who is going to fix it.

I think you will find the Ford 6.7 to be quiet and refined when compared to the Cummins. The Cummins is an old school inline 6 cylinder well proven to last 500,000 miles or more and often outlasts the rest of the truck. If smooth and quiet with quick acceleration is important, get the Ford. The Cummins has 25% less engine components to fail, is all cast iron and uses the proven CP3 fuel pump. Both fine trucks.

The Ram also has a better engine exhaust brake on the engine as standard.

This is really a question you will have to answer yourself as every Ford guy will tell you to buy ford and every Ram guy will tell you to buy Ram. People are often blindly loyal to one brand or the other. All I can offer is my personal experience. I have owned just about every brand of vehicle out there (from chevy to yugo) I have had many dodge and chrysler products and they have always treated me well. I am on my second cummins truck an 06 mega cab with almost 200k worked hard the whole time I have owned it and it has been great. I have looked at getting a new truck and looked at both ford and ram. I personally don't trust the powerstroke 100%. I had my daughters focus in for warranty work and they had a new powerstroke in getting a new engine at 15k and I have talked to at least 4 others that have had engines before 60k but I do like the ford trucks but think if I do get a new one it will be another cummins. I think you will be happy with which ever you choose. Good luck in your decision.

I have owned Dodge in the past and will never buy another. To many problems. They are junk in my eyes.

In addition, their looks are a deal-breaker as well. It is like they are trying too hard to be country-bumpkin.

Having said that, I still don't have good feelings about Ford's diesels.

For all of them... how freaking hard is it to build a reliable Diesel engine? These things aren't a new invention!

Although I have a RAM Cummins, I do not consider myself a "RAM guy" as when I purchased mine, I shopped the Chevy & Ford both. I selected the RAM because of the tried & true Cummins diesel which to me was the most important part of the equation, then I was able to get the AISIN tranny which is reported to be at least as good as the Allison Chevy uses, so I feel I got the best of both worlds and since motor plus tranny are key components in towing, the RAM for me was the better choice. I ended up discounting Ford because since somewhere around 2000 there have been far too many reported issues with their diesel motors, some seem ok others not so much. I also fail to understand Ford's approach with their diesel motors, it seems prior to 2000 or so, they had a pretty darn good diesel, then went through a number of changes. It seemed to me like too much experimenting going on for my taste. The Cummins has been a solid platform for a long time. Also my wife and I preferred the ride and looks of the RAM more than the other two. In the end all will do the job, you just have to decide what is best for you and what will make you happy with the purchase.

I can't say much except get the one you like and want. $3500 isn't much over the life of the truck either way.

When I go to looking at a new truck next year, they'll all be on the list.
I will say that the one thing I've had go wrong with the truck I have now, I fixed in about 15 minutes in a bowling alley parking lot.
