What are these "plugs" of which you all speak?

Sorry, couldn't resist. I haven't purchased a gasoline powered vehicle (except my motorcycle) since the 20th century. As for my recent trade-in experience, it came down to this: did I want to spend (another) $2k to repair an 11 year old truck that was just marginally happy pulling my camper (when I had the same repair done 3 years and not that many miles ago,) or do I bite the bullet, go back into car payment debt and buy a newer truck that would be more suited to my towing needs. Life's too short to drive a truck you don't like or no longer have confidence in!

My '01 F-250 PSD CC 4x4 has 197,000 miles now. I recently had to replace the transmission, but the engine is still plenty strong. I went to a dyno day with the local Power Stroke club and at the wheels, mine's putting out 242hp and 504ft·lbs torque with just an aftermarket exhaust and intake (stock programming). Stock ratings were 250/505 at the crank.

I had planned on trading it in at 10 years... even tested the new Super Dutys and F-150 ecoboosts. After that, my truck, that was paid off for 6+ years now, looked even better to me. Planning on diving it until it's dead, fixing it and repeating that a few times.

What did you trade up from?
The new Ram/Cummins trucks sound pretty good to me and the next time I'm looking, I'll for sure be testing them.

I tow with a 1997 F150 5.4l V8 with 150,000 miles. No dents, rust, worn upholstery and it still runs and drives like it did when it was new. I have thought about what I would do if it breaks down on a trip. I guess the choices are repair it or take what you can get for it on a trade. When it was a young pup, it pulled a Cardinal 5th wheel with a super slide. Did this four or five years and bought a motorhome. Now it's pulling a toyhauler with a polaris rzr inside.

Exactly what I have planned for such an occasion. All part of an adventure on the road I guess.

Issues can happen at any age on a vehicle. just keep up on the maintenance and don't neglect or beat on it.

2005 Chevy 2500HD crew cab. 6.0 and only 75,000 miles on it. Purchased it brand new with only 15 miles on it. Hubby is a stickler for maintenance. This truck is my daily driver and our family truck while the hubby drives an 03 chevy S10 extended cab. (he drives farther and more) We have had so many offers from people who want to buy it. Just the other day my boss was asking if we were gonna buy a new once since we bought a new fiver cuz he was looking for 3/4 ton. HECK NO!!! Love this truck and it's paid for!!!! Only problem we have had is the transfer case went out in it while we were pulling the fifth wheel to Bennett Springs 2 years ago. It happend on our way down when we were almost there. 3 hour trip back home with rumbling but made it home safe and sound. Hubby runs BG products in it and it was replaced for free under their warrenty. Great truck!!!

I traded in my '99 F150 regular cab with 136k miles since we had just had our second child. We couldn't all fit in the truck.

I traded in my '05 F150 crew cab with 53k miles after 5 years and 3 months (the shortest amount of time I've ever owned a vehicle) due to buying the fiver. The F150 just wasn't up to the task.

I plan to keep my '08 F250 for at least another 7 years (for a total of 8). I figure I will be ready for a new one by then, assuming I can afford it!

Real trucks don't have spark plugs! (I'm joking, not intending to start a diesel/gas debate)

I LOVE Bennet Springs! One of our favorite parks, though it's difficult to get into the full hookup spots without reservations months in advance!

I agree!! One of ours too. We make at least 1-2 trips each year. We have stayed in all the campgrounds except for #2 and 3. The bottom is by far our favorite and now we plan our trips so that we can get in down there. The kids love it and there's nothing like being able to get up and walk straight to the stream to fish!!

We change our vehicles out when we have over 100k AND it is costing to repair more than the payment of a new one averaged over a year
ex. Needs trany i'll fix that

In one year needs tranny, fuel pump, 3 window regulators, oil pressure sending unit ...
Just did that sold my PERFECT 2001 sedan deville caddy with only 65k on it was just rotting away in the driveway.

08 Ram 2500 4x4 Hemi Larmie Megacab. Got 147,000km and good for another 2 or 3 hundred thousand yet. Had an 04 Ram 1500 4x4 Hemi before this one. See no reason to get rid of the beast, it is just going to get some needed upgrades like a Carli Performance 2.0 suspension and the cab mounts off the 4th gen Megacab to smooth out the ride a bit and probably a MyGig nav system (yes they do fit) as well. I do all my own upgrades and major maint. Oil changes it goes to the dealer. I really would like a 2012 Superduty or 2012 HD Ram though as they are both pretty sweet rides.

I wish - there are 16 of them! The manual calls for replacement at 36,000 and it is idling a bit rougfher than it used to.

You know a mechanic guy just told me that on the F2-350+ trucks with the Gas V10s have had their spark plug mileage downgraded to 60-70K depending on the dealer. Apparently the plugs sit to long and get fused in and then they brake, has nothing to do with the actual electrode eroding.

I have 61k on mine I will have to look at changing them.

I had been reading this thread with interest as we wondered this question. Yesterday I went to engage the parking break on our '03 suburban that has 125k miles when the emergency break cable snapped. Luckily I was only 1 mile away from my mechanic, but thoughts of if that had happened next weekend while we were 3 hours from home with the trailer have made me think that was a sign. We started looking today and been amazed how hard it is to find a low mileage suburban with a HD tow package. We've called ahead to multiple dealers to verify the vehicles we see on their website have the tow package. They've all just looked at the hitch and said "yep" without actually verifying it has the tranny cooler and higher gear ratio that take the tow capacity from 5000 lbs to 7900. It has been a long and frustrating day. I now have all the pertinent RPO codes memorized and have educated quite a few salesmen on the difference.

I sure like to have a newer F150, but ole silver is paid for and still pulls great, and don't leak or use any oil or other fluids. Those crew cabs look nice. I've changed the spark plugs, have new brakes all around.I hope for another 100,000 miles.

The F150 that I bought new in 1979 I sold to my daughter in 2006.....with only 185,000 miles on it.

Figuring I keep my 2006 F150 the same amount of time, I will be due a new truck in 2033.

I assume you have the 7.3l. If so we just did a swap on my buddy's truck. We got a 6.0 cooler (31 pass) and replaced the 7.3 cooler (9 pass). He saw a 50-70 degree drop on his tranny temps! If wasn't too hard to do either. Just a thought.

Yep... The 6.0 cooler is on my to do list. I wish I had time before I leave for Topsail Hill in 12 days, but it's just not going to happen. Too much stuff, like work and mowing the grass and such, gets in the way of what I'd rather do!

Total out the door cost was $200. He paid $125 for the cooler and the rest was in hoses, he went all aeroquip fittings though.
