I know where the DEF tank is. We don't have a gauge, can't see the dang thing to judge how full it is and it doesn't have a dip stick
To use for measuring liquid depth. So I've decided I don't like DEF for those reasons. Otherwise we guesstimate and add DEF after a few thousand miles. Driving a 2013 GMC 3500hd Denali truck.

I'm disappointed in my 2014 3500 GMC in that I pulled my 26ft'r 1400 miles and had to add DEF with only having 2600 miles on the truck. GM service said it has to do with the load your pulling as to how much DEF you use. When I purchased the truck, they said I would need to add DEF at the oil change, boy were they wrong. DEF is cheap, just fill'r up before you head out.

Yep. Carrying a couple bottles with us. Most truck places have so it's not hard to come by. You really didn't think the sales person knew all the details did you; or if he did know that he'd tell you? Lol

I have 4000 miles on my 2014 Chevy and haven't added DEF yet. Half of those miles are towing. Are you sure it was full to begin with?

I purchased a bottle/jug of DEF at my local Ford dealer.. And was told in a whisper .."Save the jug and refill it at pilot/flying Js travel centers"...and ..that's what I have done for over a year now...I pull into lanes where the semis refuel..top off the truck DEF on board tank ..then refill the jug if needed @ $2.79 per gallon..now...I am wait to hear a story about recycled beer for the urea and rain water for ionized h2o..

GM ships their trucks with two gallons of DEF in the tank. The dealers are supposed to fill the tank with another 3.3 gallons during PDS. Most don't. Mine didn't. If you go 2000 miles before you get warned to fill, you had a service tech who saved the dealer $5.

When we purchased our 2013 Chevrolet 2500 hd D/A. The sales manager gave DW a good bottle of wine. The salesman gave me a jug of DEF. The DEF went unopened a lot longer than the wine .
I drove about 3100 miles before the dash information center showed the exhaust fluid level low. Rather have some type of gauge vs "ok" and "low".

Your DIC should give you fair warning as to how much DEF you have left. My indicator comes on when I have just under 900 miles left. At that point you can scroll through to your DEF indicator and it will read a % of how much is left in the tank. I ran mine down to less than 50 miles to see if it would hit the limp mode, it didn't. My 2011 2500 didn't have any type of indicator other than the occasional "miles left" message.

That "OK" display is how GM lets the dealers skate with a couple of bucks. The tank is 20 liters, or 5.3 gallons. It has four level sensors (just like RV tanks) for reference, 1/3, 2/3 and full. As long as it is over 1/3, it shows "OK". That is why they add at least two gallons -- to get that "OK" display. My sales dude made sure to show me that before I understood the system.
The % indication is a calculated estimate, as is the mileage. That is why the mileage estimate shuts off and you get the various warnings.
I usually run it until empty then dump in one 2.5 gallon jug. With Florida temperatures, I want to keep it fresh to avoid the "poor quality" warnings since it is not easy to drain the DEF tank.

they also short you 1 qt in your rear diff, it is topped at 4 but you will only get 3 at first change, I have did 5 of my and friends trucks and all were short 1..

I don't use DEF, but I greatly prefer using the truck pumps- they're way quicker!

I filled my Diesel truck and topped of my DEF at pilot/flyng J
all the way to Florida & back the last 2 years

Thanks. We are considering sliding Southwest on I10. It will make it a lot easier on DH to pull in the Semi lanes. He's a tad nervous of the 40' 5ver. We had a 30' bumper pull and he was just getting use to that when I sprung the 5ver on him. I been towing horse trailers for over 30 yrs. He just started TT towing 5 yrs ago. Poor man - the things he does put up with.
