Question DEF For 2016 Ford F350

This is a TV question for all you diesel owners. I finally bit the bullet and bought a new F350 Super Duty to tow my fifth wheel. The owners manual recommends Ford DEF. Is any DEF ok to use? Also, I recently towed my RV about 800 miles at 65 mph and when I checked the DEF level on the instrument panel it said it about half full. I added 2.5 gallons is that normal use of DEF when towing? Should it have been less or more? I'm new to this so bear with me and don't call me a doofus. Truck had about 2500 miles on it when I started out. Lots of up and down hills in north Fl and on I75.

Any DEF will work, it all has to meet the same specs whether you buy it at the Ford dealer, inside a truck stop or auto parts store, wallymart or pump it from the truck stop pumps that have it on the fuel lane. All same-same.

I average using a gallon about every 1,000 miles. A bit more when towing.

The DEF tank on my 2013 F250 supposedly holds only 5 gallons of DEF. The "electronic bulletin board" on your unit will tell you when you are getting too low on DEF.

Any DEF will work. The fresher the DEF the better though as it does break down over time. The truck stops do replenish their DEF frequently so no worries there as well. When I used DEF, I used the Blue DEF in the 2.5 gallon jug with the built in spout.which can be bought at any autoparts store. Now I'm deleted so no more DEF.

I bought two 2.5 gallon jugs from walmart and just refill them at the truck stops that sell it at the pump. $2.29 a gallon compared to about $12 for a 2.5 gallon jug.

I'd also highly recommend the Ford DEF fill nozzle so you don't spill any on the truck or accidentally overfill the tank. It is about $7.00 at your dealer.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask or PM. I'm a moderator on one of the Ford diesel forums and have learned so much about these trucks.

I use Ford DEF. Certainly burn more when towing the 5er. I check it and add when shows under 1/2 tank. Blue Def at NAPA about $3 for 2 1/2 gallon more than at the Ford dealer.

It's just urea and water.

Just don't buy outdated DEF. It's like milk, but the date it expires is in 'code' sometimes on some bottles in stores. Wait till you're really low to add more.......that keeps most of it that you are using at the same date.

To be honest, I don't know 100% if that is accurate.......but I've been told this by 3 mechanics.

Walmart has 2 different brands........one is about 2.5X the price of the other. Either one works.

Only thing I hate about the Chevy is the DEF deal. Fillup is under hood, which is stupid. And the DIC panel only says "OK" until it gets to 30%, then it tells you percentages. Don't run out! Most new trucks will slow down or stop if you do.

P.S.
There aren't any hills in N. Florida!

I noticed recently that Tractor Supply Co had DEF for $8 +/-. Samsclub has the blue deaf for $10 and change. Wish I had a truck stop fairly close.
