Much more plausible!

No idea. If I had to guess it's bc the new L5P engine is 80% all new parts than the previous Duramax engine. So maybe an updated design on the exhaust system? I haven't seen a L5P come through here with a DEF issue yet... knock on wood.

Only issue with that is you have to tune and you just voided your powertrain warranty.

I've read thru the whole thread and not one person mentioned the Cummins turbodiesel (Ram) having a problem with the DEF system. I only noticed one comment about a Ford F350. Is this problem due to what products GM used on their Duramax diesels DEF systems? Are there any Ram CTD owners out there who have experienced this problem? I have a '17 Ram 2500 CTD, CC, SB that I tow with, my son has a '16 Ram 3500 CTD, CC, LB, SRW and my son in-law has a '16 Ram 2500 CTD, CC, LB and none of us have had a DEF system problem in a combined 130,000 miles.

All brands have issues with the DEF systems. The OP has a Duramax so that's why we are discussing GM failures. I personally had a Powerstroke with no DEF issues with 100k miles when traded in and now currently have a Duramax with 124k miles and no DEF issues. Not every single truck has this failure.

I've replaced 2 DEF reservoirs on the new L5P, good news is they are very easy to change!

2015.5 3500 here. No DEF heater failure here but did loose the DEF injector on a cross country trip at 20,000. Covered under warranty. Lucky I ran into stellar service at a dealer in Cedar Rapids, IA who got us back on the road quickly.

I have the 2015.5 2500. You should confirm but I'd guess you'll get the emissions warranty extension like I did. You can log into the my chevy and when they get your Vin it looks all that stuff up.

Yeah thanks for the heads up it is covered. Unfortunately I have had bigger issues then the DEF. I have 31,000 miles on my truck now. My truck is almost exclusively my tow vehicle thus the low mileage. Yes it get driven to keep it in shape so to speak. In that time I have had the oil cooler replaced, rear pinion seal, DEF injector and the biggest issue was a leaky rear main seal. It took the dealer 4 attempts to fix the rear main complete with GM engineering, Regional GM manager and whole lot of BS. Knock on wood everything thing is good now. Crazy part is I love my truck and it has never let me down despite the above. As a result I now have bumper to bumper warranty until 140,000 or 2023.

LOL....yeah I guess but not quite that quickly. The rear main was not a few drips. On one occasion it pissed oil by the time I got it home from the dealer!

On the cummins forum, a few people had DEF heater issues during the 'polar vortex' last winter but it's not too common. We're into our third winter with our 2500 and only had one sensor start to act up last spring, but it was just a CEL and no limp mode. Truck lives outside, and we're currently seeing -40C temps ambient before windchill is added. Lots of idling and short trips - yes they won't grenade when you do that, contrary to what every online expert says.
