Diesel additives???
New 2016 F 250 6.7L Powerstroke diesel. I'm getting a lot of "advice" about additives. Any credence to the claim they'll increase mileage and performance? Not getting much help in the Ford diesel supplement.
Thank you!

I also have a 2016 6.7 Powerstroke. I have always used Opti-lube products, but have to order it online. Excellent products. Right now I'm using Diesel Kleen till I order more Opti-lube. Diesel Kleen can be bought most anywhere. As far as mileage and performance gains, maybe a very slight mileage increase. Biggest benefit as far as I'm concerned is keeping the fuel system lubed and clean.

Lubricity is what you are looking for, not much else, thank the gov. for the ULSD back in 07 IIRC. With common rail fuel system's over 26,000 psi. and the newer fuel pump's they don't take too kindly to a very slight amount of contamination like diesel's of 10 year's ago. A little water, gas contamination and a fuel system can de destroyed, meaning complete replacement. I think Ram is the only manufacturer of the big 3 that still use old school high pressure fuel pump's.

Diesel additives are recommended because US fuel isn't very good as evidenced by its low cetane and lubricity compared to diesel in Europe.
A good fuel additive should improve cetane, fuel lubricity, and gel point in the winter.
A splash of biodiesel, about 5%, is one of the best and more affordable ways to improve your fuel in the summer months. I would not use 20% biodiesel because of oil dilution issues from the DPF regeneration process and resulting potential for oil polymerization caused by the biodiesel leaking past the rings.
XPD optilube is what I use when I can't get biodiesel but it is expensive.
If I'm on the road and need an additive than Power Service Diesel Kleen is what I use.
In my non-DPF diesels, I simply add about about 1/2 oz per gallon of low ash 2 stroke oil into the tank with a standard dose of Power Service (Grey bottle in summer and White bottle in winter).

By the way, I use Opti lube, or Stanadyne in mine, even tho I have an "old school" HPFP in our's, bought an old truck for multiple reason's. That was the big reason.

Opti-lube is what I use. I usually put in the recommended amount every 4th tank. I always put some in on the initial tank for a trip as well.

1 qt of Opti-lube goes WAY further than other products. Especially their summer formula. It's good for 640 gallons

Stanadyne Performance Formula. I use it for lubricity and the cetane boost. I have gotten maybe 1-2 mpg better, but more importantly, regens are much farther apart. No more than one each tank.

I use the Ford PM-22 in my pickup year round. I use the Power Service white bottle in my work truck in winter, 2012 Pete. Don't run additive in the Pete in summer. No issues with either.
Does either improve fuel economy, nope.

I use the summer+ Opti-Lube blend in my old 7.3l. All I can tell is that it makes the engine substantially quieter. No difference in mpg or performance. The summer+ formula is pretty inexpensive as well and I only drive it in warmer months so I don't worry about fuel gelling in the cold.

I burn 100,000 worth of fuel a year in my KENWORTH and never add anything to its tanks, so same for my powerstroke

Well whatever kind of oil they are squeezing out of those snakes sure makes my truck run quieter. And with an old diesel that sure makes a difference in comfort.

I can see adding lubricant for the older pre ULSD but wouldn't they design the newer diesels that require ULSD to run on it without lubricants? Just a thought. I have never added any to mine.

The big problem is the HPFP is not a quality piece, they can't take any type of contamination, water, gas. It is not that they aren't designed for pressure, they can't take any contaminants run through them, the U.S. has low quality diesel.

Quart of two stroke oil and a bottle of Amsoil Cetane booster per 60gal fill up for my 2007 5.9 Cummins. Slight mpg improvement, <1 mpg, but huge difference in quieting the engine noise, smoothness and felt power/response.

I use both Amsoil Cetane Boost and Amsoil Injector Clean+Cold Flow Improver in the cold months/Injector Clean in the warm months. I have noticed a little increase in mileage. Biggest thing I have noticed is that it runs much more quite. It is a 2015 MBS.

You guys are nicer to your truck then me. I change oil with the DIC says to and put what ever blend diesel is at the station I stop at. The only special thing I do try go high traffic stations. Just before the warranty expires I trade for another one start over and let someone else worry about it. I'm spending my kids inheritance and enjoying life....
