So on my new 2015 RAM 2500 6.7 Cummins with 1425 miles I should be ok on my first tow tomorrow?

My 2015 Ram diesel manual says the engine requires no break-in however the drivetrain does. No towing for the first 500 miles and then don't exceed 50mph for the first 500 miles of actual towing. I made it to the first 500 miles without towing. Towing the next 500 at 50mph is another story. :-)

Yeah... I got to drive about 90 miles to the dealer towing the old trailer to trade in and pick up our new toy hauler... Don't know if I can keep it under 50....

Diesel engine break-in before towing

The owner's manual for my 2014 Ram 2500 6.7L diesel says not to tow for the first 500 miles, then not to exceed 50 mph for the next 500 miles. As Ninback stated, that's another story, especially when it concerns I-81 in Penn.

At DD school (1999) they stressed that the only thing needing "break in" was rings, and that was actually "wear in " or proper seating. A diesel that is not pulling hard will not develop a good piston ring seal or seat because the "keystone " ring design needs high cylinder pressures to seat.If ran easy during the first100 hrs or so the cylinder walls will glaze and the rings will never seat properly.New engines were run on a dyno at 50% then 75% load for no more than 20 minutes, cooled off and run at 90% load for 10 minutes. At no time were they "lugged" which was described as the point where additional fuel did not result in a rpm increase. These were 53 and 71 series engines destined for marine applications.I used this same logic when I got my new 7.3 ,driveing it normally for a hundred miles, then hooking up to my equipment trailer loaded at about 16k lbs and pulled it up to where we were building the house we live in now,325 miles, and then back again 325 mi.I showed it no mercy and today at 200000 miles it pulls just as hard and uses no oil between changes of 5000 miles.Thats all I can say about that.

edit) a couple years later at Cummins school for the 903 marine engines they were basically run the same way befor shipment.

The owner's manual for my '12 Ram 3500 with a Cummins had the cautions about not towing for the first 500 miles, but it also had a recommendation to work the truck under heavy load before reaching 6,000 miles. As noted above, the load helps seat the rings and improve both power and economy.

my Duramax towed the day I bought it. Semi trucks and farm tractors don't get a break-in, they go to work, like diesels were meant to do.

My Ram 1500 EcoD says no break in required.

ENGINE BREAK-IN RECOMMENDATIONS
The diesel engine does not require a break-in period due
to its construction. Normal operation is allowed, providing
the following recommendations are followed:
• Warm up the engine before placing it under load.
• Do not operate the engine at idle for prolonged
periods.
• Use the appropriate transmission gear to prevent
engine lugging.
• Observe vehicle oil pressure and temperature indicators.
• Check the coolant and oil levels frequently.
• Vary throttle position at highway speeds when carrying
or towing significant weight.
2
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING YOUR VEHICLE 13
NOTE: Light duty operation such as light trailer towing
or no load operation will extend the time before the
engine is at full efficiency. Reduced fuel economy and
power may be seen at this time.
The engine oil installed in the engine at the factory is a
high-quality energy conserving type lubricant. Oil
changes should be consistent with anticipated climate
conditions under which vehicle operations will occur.
The recommended viscosity and quality grades are
shown under “Fluids, Lubricants and Genuine Parts”,
under “Maintaining Your Vehicle” in this manual. NONDETERGENT
OR STRAIGHT MINERAL OILS MUST
NEVER BE USED.

My 2011 GMC was 500 miles without towing, at different speeds up to 50 mph. Then with the 5er for another 500 miles. Where we camp in Michigan was 500 mile return, so that worked out for us.

why would there be a break in period for a diesel? My buddy bought a new KW with a Cummins and he hooked up to #25000 load and hauled it to Florida. It had 40 miles on it when he hooked up and my bother in law hooked up to his 32' cougar to his 2500 and went to Myrtle beach. He had around 100 miles on it when he hooked up and went.

Diesels are made for towing so hook up and go

My new GMC 2500 HD didn't have many miles on it when our trailer was ready. I went to the dealership (CW) had someone help us hook up to our fifth wheel and away we went home. I really had no choice.

It isn't about breaking in the engine, it is the differentials (front and rear), it should go at least 500 miles before towing anything heavy, the gears need at least this much time or you can cause them to over heat and burn them up. I have seen differential housings discolored due to heat because the break-in period was not followed. This will also void your warranty.
