Diesel Exhaust Filter Cleaning.

I have 2015 Ford F350 PS that hasn't been driven much for last 6 months due to back surgery. Lately I have taken on some short trips and seems like just before I get home a screen pops up on my DIC that says something to the effect "Exhaust Filter Cleaning" for about 4 seconds then goes way. When it goes away is done or should be drive around the block and let it complete the cycle? Should I take on highway and drive it? I going fill up the tank today because we are leaving for the Caribbean and won't be back to the end of the month and just going to sit while we are gone.

Kenny,
When it says that what is doing and how does it cleaning the filter? Might be dumb question but if don't know you have to ask.

Diesel Exhaust Filter Cleaning.

It's dumping extra fuel, and super heating your diesel particulate filter.

That link should be required reading for diesel truck owners. I quote from the link but there lot more good information on the link.

"If the regeneration is unsuccessful due to an insufficient driving cycle the extra fuel injected into the cylinders will not burn and will drain into the sump. As a result, oil quality will deteriorate and the level will rise. Most DPF equipped engines will have an oil quality/viscosity sensor but it is important that you check that the oil level does not increase above the maximum level on the dipstick as diesel engines can run on their own oil if the level is excessive – often to the point of destruction. If you ignore the DPF warning light and keep driving in a relatively slow, stop/start pattern, soot loading will continue to build up until around 75% when you can expect to see other dashboard warning lights come on too. At this point driving at speed alone will not be enough and you will need to take the car to a dealer for 'forced' regeneration."

All I can say is WOW.... Glad I asked. I guess there isn't any dumb questions. Off to check the oil level and drive on the highway.

When I was at Ford, I had a little old lady customer with a vw golf tdi.

Every few months, she would bring her car in for me to force a manual regen cycle.

I had the cable and vw software to do this. She just didn't drive it enough, and was fine paying us to do this.

The regen takes more than a few seconds. On mine ( see sig) it takes a good 30 mins of driving at speed. I added an Edge Iniight engine monitor which allows me to see the soot level and when I am in regen. I can also force a regen if needed. If I know I am going on a 30 min+ drive and am close to regen with no long trips planned after that , I will force the regen and be OK. .

Reading the manual is always a good idea, GM has this in a separate manual that comes with the duramax.

If it's a newer ford then it's dumping def not fuel I thought?? You need a good run on the hwy to exercise that puppy. Regens take more than a few seconds. If you see the screen pop up I would at least drive it for 15-20 mins if you haven't driven it much lately.

DEF is constantly being injected. Very small amounts.

DEF is continuously added in proper proportion to reduce NOx emissions.

The soot particle trap is cleaned by injection of unburned fuel into exhaust system to burn off soot. When in regen, the idle is usually increases ad well.

This is normal in the 6.7 PSD. The DPF cleaning can be either "active regeneration" by injecting diesel fuel into the DPF to increase temperature or by "passive regeneration" which is simply the sensors taking note that the DPF temperature from normal operation (usually towing) has increased to the level required for regeneration. You will get the pop-up on the display with either regen. No big deal. It's normal. The powertrain control module keeps track of all of this. A manual regen would only be required in the most unusual circumstances (too much easy driving for too long as an example).

DEF is injected into the SCR portion of the exhaust system and not associated with DPF regen.

Modern diesels are made to be driven... not abused but not driven by granny going to the store either. Towing is the best action you can do for your truck... no matter if a Ford, Cummins, or a Duramax.

Take your truck out to the interstate once and a while and give it a little "gas". You are doing it (and yourself) a favor! Today's diesels especially with items like the variable vane turbos on them can actually become clogged with soot if you don't put it to work now and then. Big money and I mean BIG money on turbo replacement.

I would agree on driving it. If you don't it will regain again next time out as it did not complete it last time. It is cold here now and today the Regen came on just as I got back from dinner. Went for a highway run at 100 kph for about 20 km each way to clean. Since I got the truck in June I have added maybe $25 of DEF, have 16,000 km on the truck. I barely get the truck warmed up on a normal daily commute, the new house we are moving too is additional 10 km so I should be up to operating temperature twice a day.

It is normal, will say real quick when it's starting and will flash real quick when it's done, should be driven at highway speed so it can finish its thing, but not a big deal to interrupt just know that next time temp is up to normal it will keep trying to regen

+1 on the above suggestions. I can always tell when my VW is doing a regen, the auxiliary fans kick on to cool the engine compartment because the extra fuel injection into the DPF really heats things up. If you don't complete the cycle and shut the engine down before it's finished, not only are you trapping excessive heat which can damage components, but now, it will have to do it again the next time you start up. Best bet is to take it on a half hour ride out on the interstate, 15 minutes out and 15 minutes back. And yes, DEF injection (also called SCR) is a totally separate event from anything that happens in the DPF. They really need to come up with some new acronyms! 😂

Grab the diesel engine supplement in your owner manual packet. Explains it in great detail and so it can be understood by the average person.

It is easy to miss that short regen message. I wish it stayed on until it was over. I watch the fuel mileage monitor to tell when it's finished. In regen your mileage tanks. Sometimes I know it has started by the sound of the engine when I am driving along at a consistent speed.

And that's why all three makes are very different and I don't go with a 25k oil change like I used to even though I use amsoil. About 10k that's it. And the newer diesel don't let them idle like the older ones.

Its normal My F350 dose it also when driving around town. But never seen it on freeway. 1st time I asked dealership and said it is part of the computer programing when you don't drive over 55 for extended period.
