diesel fuel additives

Everyone that doesn't live under a rock has heard that ULSD could be the death of older diesels. I've recently been turned on to using marine outboard oil in my fuel, specifically TCW-3. I've been using about .5 oz per gallon for the last 2 tanks. I read an "independent laboratory study" showing about every additive under the sun and this was close to the top for adding viscosity to the fuel that that was removed when the sulfur was taken out. I used to use Diesel Kleen, it rated fairly well but is much more expensive than 2 stroke oil. To early to tell if my MPG's have increased as some have claimed however the engine does seem to be quieter(or it's my imagination) No, it doesn't smoke like a weed whacker. Do you believe in additives? If so what do you use?

I used stanadyne every time I filled up when I owned the '04.5, but I've never used it in the '06. I'm thinking about running some biodiesel or some vegi oil through mine to clean out the lines, tank, and injectors but not a full tank, just a few gallons at a time to clean things up. I'll be watching the fuel filter pretty closely to see how it goes.

I work for a large trucking company. We have some pretty old trucks...mine is a 2001 with well over a million miles on it.
We have not experienced ANY problems related to ULSD.
We also do NOT use any additives of any type. Our very smart shop foreman has studied it for years...not needed!
As far as the fuel...when have you heard of any dirty fuel...or for that matter fuel with water in it?

I don't believe the fuel to be dirty, but rather the tank that it comes from. Knowing that the filter catches most of that, I'm sure that if I dropped the tank, I'd find some goodies or maybe even some sludge that has built up over the years from filling up at different fuel stations, some of which were questionable at the time.

I haven't had any problems with the fuel...but some have.
I haven't had any problems with water in my fuel either...but some have.

Each area is different and let's face it...there's plenty of legit station owners out there, but it's not unheard of for water or soil to make it into the tanks. Otherwise, this wouldn't even have made conversation.

That fear of service station tanks is what keeps the snake oil salesmen alive folks.
We fuel at hundreds of truck stops and mom and pops every week. (Running over 500 trucks around the USA.)
Have not heard of one single problem with fuel.

PS...the guys that fill the tanks check them for water.

It's not the cleanliness of the fuel that I worry much about as I generally get fuel from the same places and they are all high traffic stations. It's the ULSD fuel that has been stripped of the lubrication that pre-2007 engines relied on to lubricate their fuel components. I too usually don't fall for the fly-by night snake oil treatments. I only mention it because I noticed a difference and knowing how diesel fuel systems work it makes perfect sense.
