Diesel Fuel Question

We have a 2011 Ford F250 diesel to pull our travel trailer. When we are traveling, we usually stop at a truck stop for our fuel. We had a situation last week that caused a bit of confusion. Before fueling, the pump asked if we wanted tractor fuel or reef (?) fuel. Can anyone tell me what the difference is?

Are you sure it was reef, and not DEF?

No, it really was "reef". I always assumed that had something to do with refrigerator fuel- but even that I don't know what it could be.

I always picked tractor fuel.

Fuel for refrigeration units is tax exempt like farm fuel. No highway taxes on it, but DO NOT get caught with a fuel tank full of it. I don't know about the rest of the country but the fines around here are astronomical. If you get pulled over and refuse to let them check for off road fuel it's an automatic $2500 fine.

I have never been asked that, but I would probably look perplexed myself till it caught on they where talking about onroad vs. offroad diesel...which is nothing more then a dye and a tax.

I've only seen it on the on-screen prompts at the pumps at truck stops.

Maybe its just where I stop, but never been asked that even at the pumps. But I use mostly Pilot and Loves, I have the Pilot RV card with pump start and the RV plus card, so it could be thats why I never get that question. At loves I just go in and give them a preauth amount and pump my fuel.

You can use it, but if caught, that is tax evasion. Saving a few bucks, is it worth the risk?

Do not use the off road fuel.

The station will know if you put it in your tank. If they do not, then they are not paying attention. I put some off road in a 5gal can to use around the house to burn brush (yes really) and I had to fill out some kind of paper work to say that it was for 'farm use'.
