diesel question

I'm about to order a new Ram diesel. Never owned a diesel before. I've done a tremendous amount of reading, but still have some questions. Any difficulty with navigating truck stops? Is def readily available? What kind of mileage to expect? I own a FR Surveyor 5er. 10,000 gvw with 1700 pin weight. Don't really need it for this one, but see a CC Silverback in our future.

Cummins diesel in Ram is strong but LOUD. Have you driven it? DEF is not a big deal. In my Duramax, 5000 miles between fills.

I have an older F350 diesel and a 2016 Mercedes diesel MH. Diesel is easy to find. DEF is available on the truck island at many places for around $2.79/gal as I recall and one can get DEF in 2.5 gal containers at WalMart for under $10. DEF does have a shelf limit that is temperature dependent.

Fuel economy towing is hard to guess at and dependent on so many variables like terrain, speed and traffic. My F350 towing a 28ft TT 7500 lb got about 11-12mpg. I generally tow at about 62mph. I know the newer diesel trucks get better mileage when not towing but don't know how they do towing. I'm sure other with experience will chime in.

Good luck!

I sure would like to know your secret. The best I have been able to get is 19.9 highway and 10.9 towing around N. Georgia. I would love to get that kind of numbers.

The tires on my Sierra 2500HD are 70 psi. No rolling resistance.

I get 13-15 mpg around town (many lights). On the highway I have seen a high of 24, but usually 20-22. Towing 8000 lbs I average 11.5 to 13 mpg.

I took a 2018 3500 for a rather lengthy test drive last week. Loved it!

You will love the RAM, I have a 2014 3500 CC 8 foot bed with cummins, I have seen 24MPG on the highway (not towing), 15 to 16 in the city and 12mpg towing 12K. You will go thru a lot more DEF when towing.

I have a 2014 Ram with the 6.7 cummins. 24 mpg on the highway with an empty bed and light to moderate traffic is pretty common. 12 - 13 mpg on the same highway towing our 2014 Rockwood, about the same weight and pin weight you have. I used 8 gallons of DEF on a 6000 mile 6 week trip this summer allot was in the rockies. Averaged 12.7 MPG the entire trip. I don't have a heavy foot, speed limit or under when empty and 60 - 65 mph max while towing.

My two sons and I own 4 Dodge/RAM Cummins diesel between us. My one son has two a 1996 2500 Dodge Reg cab long bed, his second Dodge is a 2006 Crew Cab that is a show truck. My truck is a 2008,2500 MEGA CAB and my other sons has a 2013.5 2500 Ram Crew Cab. This truck by far is the most quiet truck I have ever been in. With the windows up and doing 65 to 70 MPH you do not even hear the engine. This truck is very quiet.

In our humble opinion there's is only one Diesel engine to own and that I the Cummins engine.

Same truck except 2500. I get slightly less mileage. Around 14 in city, and 11.5(ish) towing.

Haven't noticed any significant change in DEF usage when towing for me.

Echo the comments.. You will love the RAM.

Mike

Never! My oldest son is part owner in a Diesel performance shop, his buddy has a DRW Duramax. This truck has had new turbos twice, fuel injectors complete set, new glow plugs, head gaskets and the usual 4X4 problems. The Cummins are still running strong and no glow plug issues.

I will take a medium duty Diesel engine straight 6 over a V8 engine any day.

Find me a dead Duramax and I'll find you a dead Cummins. Plenty out there.

Oh, good to see your engine brand found its way into a Nissan....

Neighbor....2004 Chev 2500HD Duramax. Just turned 213,000 miles or their return from 6000 mile vacation. Outside of normal wear and tear maintenance...he hasn't had any major problems. Now in my defense...co-worker just had his Cummin's replaced in his 2014 Ram....it blew up. So Pro's and Con's for all.
Ford, Chevy, GMC, Dodge...etc...you're gonna find some bad apples in the bushel.
