Question Dinghy turn signals for a motorhome newbie

Bought a 2015 Georgetown in January. Now, I am trying to make preparations to tow a 2010 Jeep Liberty. I am using Blue Ox everything: tow bar, base plate and their Patriot brake system...got it all at etrailer.com. Had to buy a 4 pin dinghy wiring harness to make the brake lights work based on the motorhome's brake signal (from its 7 pin connector) and not the dinghy's brake signal. But, I was told that I needed something else to make the turn signals work. They said to purchase a Roadmaster Brake Light Relay. In the instructions, there were so many serious warnings and cautions regarding installation that I just had to call the company. The tech rep emphatically said, "DO NOT INSTALLL THAT ROADMASTER ON A JEEP LIBERTY!" Of course, that took me back a few paces. Here's the bottom line: motorhome brakes make the dinghy brake lights come on; but motorhome turn signals don't make the dinghy turn signals come on. (We just moved from a fiver to a Class A, and this is our first attempt to tow a dinghy.) What am I missing that will make the turn signals work on the dinghy?

This is what you need to run the lights for your jeep liberty. Click image for larger version

Piece of cake! They are simply plug in series with existing wiring and connectors at the tail lamps, run your wiring to the front of jeep and then you have a short 4 pin jumper harness from front of jeep to 4 pin trailer connector on rear of Rv.

The libby will more than likely flash red with the turn signals and not amber while it is towed. But, during normal use, they will work as normal. Also, your CHMSL (Center High Mounted Stop Light) will probably not work.

Dijoeboss, ChooChooMan74,

Your words turned out to be a breath of fresh air as they shed light on what hardware I was supposed to use and what I was supposed to see. From the wiring harness picture you uploaded, I was able to determine it's essentially the same thing that I have. (But, you didn't show a "Brake Light Relay".) However, even though I have the basic harness, I just wasn't getting the results you do. So, I reassessed what I had done and found two problems: The passenger side brake light bulb was burned out; and I discovered an excessive amount of corrosion on my truck's 4-flat. (I used the truck to take the place of my motorhome since it is in the shop.) So, I replaced the bulb and scraped a lot of corrosion off all four pins. What do ya know, it works! And, you're right about the turn signal showing up in the brake light.

I guarantee, this Brake Light Relay is going back tomorrow.

Your experience and willingness to help is a blessing. Thanks.

Vince

Maybe everyone else knew this but us..... We noticed that the turn signals were not working on our wrangler when the brake pedal was depressed by the brake controller since the brake light is receiving voltage from both the towing wiring harness and the vehicle brake switch. Our wrangler uses the same light for brake and turn. We removed the m1 fuse (wrangler specific). Maybe there is another solution but there is not much publicity on the need to check your turn signal while braking and solutions if they do not work.

Have you towed the Liberty? What was your experience? Do you have a brake control inside the Jeep to activate the Liberty's brakes? We have a Class C and I'm considering towing our 2010 Liberty.

We tow our Jeep Liberty everytime we go out of town, no problems, gone from Oklahoma to Orlando back to Oklahoma, no problem, yes I use a blue ox patriot brake system, again- no problems with any of the set-up.

We are currently in TX after leaving OH last week. On the way, our brand new Blue Ox Patriot locked up the brakes on our Jeep Liberty. Thankfully, we were on a circular freeway onramp. So, I was going slow and able to pull over to the side immediately after the remote warning started beeping and flashing an "E" for error. (No apparent damage to the tires, but I had to pull hard to get the Patriot out of the floor since the pushrod had locked in the full forward position.) After getting ahold of Blue Ox I reported an error code of "A04" showing on the unit. According to the lady I spoke with, that means "hard drive failure". So, I completed our TX leg of the trip without a brake controller. To their credit, Blue Ox had one sent via FedEx which arrived in two days.
