Do I need a 7-pin connector in truck bed with a Revolution/SideWinder ?

Hi,

I've seen that there are kits available for installing a 7-pin connector in the truck bed, that hook into the wiring for the bumper connector.

My question is whether I'll need a truck bed connector when towing a trailer with a Revolution/Sidewinder ?

Since the turning point is effectively right at the back of the truck, and the cable from the 5th wheel comes from close to the king pin box, it seems like the cable should connect to the bumper connector just fine, but just wanted other folks opinions.

Many don't, but I put one in before picking up the trailer. I really like it and put it between the rear wheel and tailgate. Instructions say between cab and rear wheel, but you'll never be able to reach it.

You don't "need" one but like randygk says, they are a lot handier. I have both for my gooseneck cattle trailer and prefer to use the truck bed connection.

Whether I need it or not, my connector mounted in the side of the bed is convient for me.

Ok, so what I'm hearing is that I shouldn't need one for when I pick up the new 5th, but that I'll probably want to install one relatively soon after

An air tailgate makes it a little easier to see the plug if it's a little out of reach in bed....otherwise, it's up on tire and into bed.

Really didn't need to but I had a plug put between rear wheel and tailgate. Just a better option in my opinion and not that expensive. Love my revolution hitch.

You might want to get it before you pick up your fifth wheel,They will help in keeping the finish on your tailgate,With your cable going over the top of your tailgate you will be taking a chance of rubbing the finish off.

As long as your pigtail is long enough to compensate for the swing of the trailer.

I have one, wouldn't be without it. When i purchased the new truck removed the old one in about 10 minutes, plug and play.

JMO, but I think it should be in the truck bed, they look "shade tree/redneck" hanging over the tailgate plus it's a lot easier for uninterested parties to unhook unbeknownst to you. My whole bed is covered while towing our 5er.

I did the over the tailgate thing and had to buy an extension cable because i ripped the junction box loose on the trailer. My new truck has it in the bed, its the only way to fly

I have both an in the bed and on the bumper 7 pin connector. I only use the in the bed connection for my 5th wheel. I have seen others that used the bumper connector and the cable was to short and it pulled the junction box down from the 5th wheel. Of course then you have to repair the junction box. The connector for the in bed is a plug and play with the truck, you just unplug the existing cable plug in the new T connector the the in bed connector and you are good to go. The only semi hard part is drilling the whole in the truck bed side wall for the new connector.

Ditto here. Installed the 7-pin inside the bed on the driver's side bed wall between the rear tire and tail gate. Very convenient.

I ran 7 cables from bumper 7 pin connector (spliced and soldered them) up thru the back square post hole and out into the hole to the "trunk" area and installed a new 7 pin connector......Now I do not get the continuous banging against the outside tail gate...J

They "dealer" put mine between to wheel well and tailgate. Wish it was forward of the wheel well. Very awkward having to bend and twist around to plug it in. Rather stand on step bar. I have revolution and don't see where plugging in below the bumper would be a problem as long as you have the cord protected from dragging or getting pinced. Good luck.

Towed my Rockwood with the Revolution hitch 2 years, ~~25,000 miles. Used the 7pin connector on the bumper and never a problem. Now do the same with my Wildcat.
