Do I need a slider 5th wheel?

I'm looking to purchase a new 2011 Cedar Creek 36RE, my tow vehicle is a 2011 F350 Diesel Crew Cab short box (6.5'). I can't find any literature on whether the 36RE in 2011 has a design for not requiring a slider 5th wheel on these shorter truck boxes?

Can anyone help?

You don't really need a slide hitch for any fifth wheel. The only thing is that you will be very limited on your turnin radius on some models. So with a short bed I wouldn't be without a slide hitch.

If it doesn't say 88deg designed or short bed trucks than assume it isn't, and go with a slider. The short bed designs have a pronounced dimple on the front corners or an extended pin box. It doesn't look like yours does. AND there are lots of slider options and even kingpin mods, so lots of variety.

Owning a 2011 36RE....go for the slider hitch. I was talking with a guy last weekend who has a short box and already has 2 dents in the cab from tight turns. Most times you won't need it but those few you will be glad you bought it..!

If you have any other questions about the 36RE just ask, I hope I can help..! If not someone here can..!

Even if it says it was designed for short beds, there's this little thing called Peace of Mind. You will feel better having it and not needing it, than you will needing it, and not having it.

A Reese Sidewinder hitchpin eliminates the need for a slider on short bed trucks by pivoting the trailer 22" back. It also allows for over 90° turns. Works great.

More than one way to skin a cat, but both ways get the job done.

NO! You don't need a slider hitch for a 2011 Silverback. The dramatic front cap design that was introduced in '09 or '10 allows for a 90+ degree turn. When I owned a 2008 Wildcat I used my slider all the time. Since buying the Silverback over a year ago I haven't used it once.

Only take advice from anyone that has your truck and trailer combination. Some short beds are not 6.5 feet and that makes a difference. Some trailers the nose is cut differently. I do not have that combination but my two cents is people I have talked with before buying my trailer, anyone with a 6.5 bed never used their slider even though they were told they would need one.

I put A PullRight in my bed it is automatic will slide back 14" and don;t have to get out of the truck or think about it. It is also removable by pulling 4 pins. But it is heavy have a hoist in my garage it lift out. They are expensive but worth the peace of mind.

Yours specifically says 90 deg, does his? The one's I saw on the web with OC model number did NOT have the dimple. So be careful what you recommend.

You are absolutely correct garbonz. My mistake and I stand corrected. Somehow I read that post as a Silverback and not a Cedar Creek. The Creeks don't have that radical front cap. I don't know if a slider hitch would be required for his model. My bad and I apologize.

Apparently I'm getting quite goofy in my old age.

Thanks everyone for your input...I just got word back from the dealer that the user manual does indeed state that it is a 88 degree front cap design. The other nice thing with the 2011 and newer F350's is that the box is 6'9" so it gives you a little more "piece of mind" than the standard 6'6" box from Dodge and Chevy. As well, as this unit has the Trail Aire pinbox, which is 5-6" longer than the traditional pinbox and therefore pushes the trailer back away from the cab quite a bit.

Thumbs up Off set Hitch

I use my Chevy 2500 DMX (6.5 box) to pull a gooseneck horse trailer so I installed an off set goose neck converversion on the king pin and killed 2 birds with one stone. The off set is about 7-8 inches back from cab.

Thanks for all the replies...I talked to the factory and since the Ford has a 6'9" box and the trailer has a TrailAire pin box, there shouldn't be a need for a slider 5th. Apparently the TrailAire pin sits forward around 5 - 6" as compared to "normal" pin boxes.
