Dodge 2500 SLT

I am looking at this truck from a local dealer and just for ha ha's I put the vin number into dodges web site and it's telling me 2489 payload and 8550 max tow! Does this sound right for a 2500? I called the dealer and claims it's a typo on their site. They say it's more 11500 for towing. Are they giving me a line of BS?

The towing number matters a whole lot less than the payload. Have them take a picture of the doorjamb stickers and send them to you.

So it's less than what the VIN decoder says.

From the payload, you deduct your weight as the driver, the passengers, pets, hitch itself, and thing you add onto the truck bed (topper, bed cover) and into the truck bed (firewood, coolers, bikes, etc.). What's left over is what you have available for tongue or pin weight which usually runs 10-15% for TTs and 20-25% for FWs.

As you can see, the "towing number" doesn't really matter because it's very unlikely you'll hit it before exceeding payload.

Are you sure it said 8550 max tow? Or did it possibly say 8550 GVWR? My F250 has a GVWR of 8800 pounds so that sounds close. If 8550 GVWR, that is the total weight rating for the truck, you, and equip you haul in it. There should be a GCVWR which would tell you the combined weight rating of the truck and anything you tow. On a 3/4 ton it should be close to 20K pounds which minus the truck (assuming 8550) would make the towing capacity given the proper hitch somewhere around 11,450 which is close to what the dealer is telling you it could pull.

I talked to the dealer again and that was cleared up. The sticker says the same as yours 8800 lbs. I think that's why they said it was a typo on the web site.

Where do I find the combined weight rating? I can't find it on the door it just has the GVWR.

That's what I currently drive for a work truck. Its a 4x4. They currently have a recall out for multiple year models of HD's for a tie rod issue. I would check with the dealer to see if it includes your model.
Congrats on the new truck.
