Dolly vs direct for towing small vehicle with Class C

I have a 28' Class C motorhome. I think if I do any extensive traveling, it would be nice to have a small vehicle for side trips etc. What are the pros and con's to using a dolly vs. hooking direct (or whatever you call it) ?

You will likely get lots of opinions on this topic.

I would say the pro is mainly the cost and you can tow just about any front wheel drive vehicle (within weight limits of course) so if you have multiple vehicles, you don't need to set up each one to be towed 4 down.

The main con is getting the car on the dolly and then hooking up the safety chains as the typically requires one to get on the ground and reach under that car.

You also need to be able to store the dolly somewhere when not in use.

The pro for towing 4 down would be the ease of hooking it up. The con would be the cost (I'd say typically in the $2k to $4k range) for each vehicle you want to tow. You also need some kind of auxillary braking system on the vehicle - with a dolly, the dolly will typically have its own braking system.

Hope that helps a little.

The first decision you must make is can your vehicle be towed four down? If it can, then for me it's a no brainer to tow four down instead of using a dolly. Easier to hook-up, no storage problem when on the site unless you have a pull-thru; and one less thing to worry about.

Hi boatnut. We dollied when we first got our Class C for almost 2 years. Then got a killer deal on an all wheel drive that had to be towed 4 down, so had to switch. I had no trouble using the dolly and given another change in circumstances would do so again. The 4 down method however is less trouble in my opinion.
