Draw Tite V-5 WD Hitch

Well I'm picking a camper up in the morning and I had this wd hitch given to me today from my Grandpa in law amd it appears to be rated for 750# hitch weight. I am new to these hitches so I am looking to find out if I'm doing more harm than good using this hitch when my hitch on my truck is rated for 800. The camper is a 2016 Wildwood 26tbss with a hitch weight of 815 if I recall..

Any input appreciated and thank you and sorry if this has been asked before!

A little more info would be helpful. What are you towing with? Are you asking about the receiver on your truck or the WD setup you were given? If the receiver on your truck is rated at 800#, I would bet that is for no wd hitch, but you should verify that. There should also be a rating for the hitch with weight distribution. Towing a trailer with 815 tongue weight with a 800# wd setup will probably result in a lot of bouncing and bucking while towing. Not a good experience.

Sorry about that! It's a 2014 silverado 1500.

And I was asking about the wd setup I was given. On the torsion bars they say 750# max. My truck hitch is 800# with no wd hitch, and is rated for 1200# with wd hitch.

Guess I'm asking which wd hitch I should be purchasing since the one I received is not rated high enough. And thank you!

You will probably get a lot of opinions about a wd hitch. I use a husky centerline which has weight distribution and sway control. So far, it has worked well for me. My trailer has a tongue weight of 965# and I have the 1200# torsion bars. I think the choices for this hitch are 800# or 1200#. The only negative about this hitch is it is a little noisy in tight turns.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was your hitch?

Mine cost right at $500. I bought it from the dealer where I got the trailer. You can probably shop around a bit and get it a little cheaper.

How far you pulling it tomorrow? Empty and dry or wet and loaded? Ours runs about 5500lb dry and enpty. We brought it home 30 miles wo WD hitch. Our truck is beefy and handled it but thevset up, with 1000 WD hitch is IMO essential when we hit the road loaded.

If the pickup is a short trip, use the hitch you have if you are running empty and see how it feels

It was maybe 20 minutes from where I bought it from and then I brought it to my brothers tonight which was maybe 25 minutes from my house. So not far. I'm running the 750# wd hitch and it wasn't bad honestly. Just think I need a 2500hd again for sure if I make any hour or longer trips. My 3.08 ratio is just not the best for towing. Ha

Yeah, that's how we cheat. An F250 set up to tow 12000 lbs doesn't have to be too picky about how much WD we get out of our
Hitch.

Well she does not pull all that bad but I think it could be improved! So now I am just on the fence about whether to get a hitch rated for 1,000# or just get the 1,200# wd hitch. Especially after loading it down I feel I will need the 1,200 pounder. Guess I just need another opinion...

Anyone have any input? I feel the 1200# is the way to go, just need some assurance!

You're about 800 now. Load up for a trip with stuff loaded under the master bed and clothes in the front closets and you'll be at 1000 on the tongue. Fill the water tank (assuming its forward from the trailer axles) and you'll get more weight. So yes, 1000-1200 lb bars make sense. I have a similar trailer with 1000 lb bars and still get too much flex.

But if you're buying, get something with integrated friction like Equalizer.

If you are changing trucks soon to a 2500hd wait and try your gift hitch on 1500 so you can get an equalizer or similar that might require changes if you go to a taller truck. If it handles well locally you can always upgrade later after establishing "need" for bigger truck.

I checked some of those out and I called etrailer today to get some input and recommended the reese straight line. Which I researched on the reese after he said that and I like that one and the reese sway control since you have no drilling into the camper frame with the sway control one since the sway control are built into the torsion bars.

The gift hitch didn't seem to work well at all. Just felt like constant bouncing and I could for sure tell it was back there. It also didn't seem to keep the truck level either. Maybe the guy at the dealer did not quite adjust it correctly though. So maybe I should try setting it up and see. I just feel I should get a bigger one because it's already under rated and that's dry weight. Hard telling how much else we will stuff in it.

I thought the extra money and effort saved if you are moving to another truck soon might make sense but if you want to keep 1500 w 3.08 try learning about your gift hitch first and how to set it up. I don't know if higher capacity bars are available for it
Local dealer did poor job of setup on first used hitch that he sold me with used TT and it did a poor job until he told me it was worn out I reminded him he just sold it to me and he then made simple improvements quickly.
Just see if it is right height and how bars affect attitude of tt and tv when you attach them and then adjust if needed changing links or bar positions.
As many opinions as questions regarding which is best. If I bought one today I would try equalizer 4 way or generic equivalent easyway E2 due to great sway control in my opinion but I've only had three different ones and they were all different in performance.

I really love my truck so I'm going to try out the Reese Sc 1200# hitch I just ordered. I would need the hitch regardless so that does not bother me getting it now and trying it out. Might as well see what the ol 1500 can do. Ha
And yeah I think I will still try and set the gift hitch up properly and see what it does. Just seems like it's dead weight being under rated already.
