Drift not sway while going down the road

Hello all

Hopefully someone has experience with a similar situation or has a solution. When going 50 - 65 mph it feels like I'm unstable or the TV wants to wander a little while going down the road. I'm using a 2011 Yukon XL Denali and a wildwood 30 ft TT. I have a Reese Dual Cam WD hitch set up. I tried removing some tongue weight and it got worse. Originally I though I was to light in the front end.

Maybe I need more psi in the rear tires of the TV?

Thanks in advance
Jason

Few things.

Tounge weight may be to light.

If tires on Denali are p rated tires you better step up to Lt tires.

You may need to scale your tv and rig to find out what's going on.
Should do this anyway!

*Check air pressure in TV tires, make sure they are fully inflated

*Check rating of tire sidewall on TV, if they are low ply, you'll get that wandering feeling...move up to stiffer sidewall tires

*From experience, if tire TV tread depth gets too low, when towing camper, TV will wander across road under any conditions...get new tires

*Definitely check that your cargo weight in TT is properly distributed to the front to avoid a very heavy rear end on TT

Might try putting more wt on front, but I would have the front end checked for alignment. Wandering is normally caused by lack of caster.

Front end is solid. Just had it in for the 30k service. It defiantly either weight balance issue or TV tire issue. Please keep the suggestion coming. I really want to figure this out. I will also try to get it on the scales

Thanks again

Did they actually check the alignment or just check it for tightness and lube it? Big difference.

What type/size are your tires on the Denali?

And this: "I will also try to get it on the scales." - do that as soon as possible.

(Edit: dang I'm slow.)

So assume the "P" rating may be the issue? Also tires are inflated to 35psi and the sidewall states max psi of 44psi. Do you thing I should add a little more psi's? These tires are like new. I hate to buy new LT's but if its a safety concern then I might just have to

The P tires are a contributing factor, not enough wt on front and not enough caster are all contributing.

FYI, a 1/4° -1/2° increase in caster over factory specs will do wonders for a wandering problem.

Would definitely run them up to max if not to 50# just to try it while towing, especially on the rear and at least 40 on the front for towing. I would let them back down to 35# when not towing as the ride will be horrible.

I doubt caster is off at 30k but maybe.
Excessive tounge weight resulting in high front end pitch will throw it off tho.

Might not be, I always have them increase caster at least 1/4° over factory. I think on mine it was L +4.10 & R +5.1 and we increased both +.25.

Boy! Dealing with this is going to make me crazy. I never had to worry about with my GMC Sierra with the Duramax.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions

I agree will all the above but also is the hitch set up correctly & is the trailer level (or close ) when it is hitched to the truck. I had a similar issue with my 22' box trailer but it was the hitch set up.

All my issues went away when I got a truck with training wheels

The above suggestions to scale is a good idea the ratings on the tire are not the best for towing:
Goodyear*Eagle LS-2
Along with the lower rating when used on an SUV per Tire Tech Information - Tire Specs Explained: Maximum Load :
P-metric tires used on passenger cars and station wagons are rated to carry 100% of the load indicated on the tire's sidewall (or listed for the tire in industry load/inflation charts). However, if the same P-metric tires are used on light trucks, (pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for example), their carrying capacity is reduced to 91% of the load indicated on the tire's sidewall.

In the mean time I would run them at max sidewall pressure while towing until you can work out the number etc
