Welcome from Georgia. I got 11-13 mpg on our trip east from AZ pulling our 5er. I got upwards of 21 mpg on our trip to VA and back to GA. Around town 17-18.

The question is based on personal experience. What you tow, where and how you drive. Thanks

Zowie. Nothing like an open ended question

We are part of a fairly large RV group and most of us have diesels. Some old, some new. Some SRW, others DRW. We actually discuss mpg occasionally. This is what we can agree to most of the time:

Ranges.
Towing - 9 to 13
Freeway not towing - 19 to 23
In town - 15 to 17

Realistic averages over complete trips out west are 10.5 towing, 20 freeway not towing.

If towing under 10k add one, over 14k subtract one from towing avg.

Wind is the biggest factor in altering mpg. Speed is next. Most of us avg 70mph when towing.

Newer diesels seem to usually do a little better, but not always. Deleted diesels always do better than non-deleted.

All of us agree that if you are worried about mpg when towing, you have the wrong hobby.

Good luck in whatever you are trying to make a decision on.

I'm about the same. Usually 11 to 13 towing and my norm is 17 to 19 commuting in to work. All. Highway I'll get 20 to 21.

I am pretty close to this also. The size of the trailer and the aerodynamics of the trailer (usually pretty poor) is a big factor.

I do see up to a 2-3 mpg drop when the fuel has a greater amount of biodiesel mixed in it.

It’s nice to know what your truck averages per gallon of fuel when planning your miles that day. But if you are worried about fuel mileage you have the wrong hobby. I try to buy the cheapest diesel I can but mainly I just keep the tank full. Besides when the tank is full you can’t get lost and that’s the most important thing to me

I agree. I used to keep track to see where it was once I got a good average I moved on. It is nice to know for planning a fuel stop or if it ta KS, something could be wrong, like.time.to change the air filter.

Hi,

My stock 2009 DMAX (130k miles) performs very similarly to that of Happy Camper, towing a 33RL Silverback.

I rarely go more than 65, use Power Service additive, and usually start looking to fuel up at around 250 miles -- particularly on those days when I'm fighting a headwind.

FWIW.

Towing 12 to 13. Not towing taking it easy and cruising at 70 about 20 to 21 mpg. Driving to work which is 8 miles city 18 miles hiway @ 65 mph combined about 18. It really sucks the diesel down if you accelerate quickly, heavy truck.
