Engine Brake on 2017 Ford Super Duty

About to take my first long trip with 2017 Ford Super Duty Diesel and 2017 Cedar Creek 5th wheel. One question I have seen discussed here in the past. Do most people drive with engine brake on all the time or only when in the hilly areas or mountains. Any suggestion or advice is welcomed. Experience speaks loudly to me. Thanks.

I turn it on and will only turn it off if I'm on a section of highway that is not busy, I don't want it to come on when just out of the throttle briefly.

I use it when I am hooked up but not any other time. Remember these aren't really Jake brakes. It's changing the pitch of the turbo veins to creat back pressure. If you are using it everyday you are working the poor variable vein turbo to death.

I don't know for sure but logic dictates that more use will cause it to wear out faster.

Tow Haul Mode

I found that the tow haul mode is all that I need when hauling around outside of the mountains. I can reach up and switch on the exhaust mode if required but always run in the tow haul mode with towing the 5th wheel.

I just finished a cross Canada trip. I used the engine brake the first two days all the time then on the third day I was pulling out and forgot to turn it on, to my surprise it hauled the 5er (33') out of the camp a lot smoother. Since then I started to play around with it and found that I only needed it in town (for stop lights) and slowing me down going down a hill. The frigging thing is awesome!!
I also found that if you hit the brakes once it will drop down a gear to slow you down faster, great for lights that change fast. I still have to play with the manual shift to see if I don't have to tap the brake pedal to save the pads even more! You will love the engine brake for mountain roads.

2014 GMC w/duramax. I run tow/haul on hilly areas, exhaust brake on long down hill runs with curves, otherwise, tow/haul off...exhaust off...better mpg on the flats with tow/haul off.

If you read the info on the Tow/Haul on the dash info screen, it states that when towing on level ground, you will get better mpg without Tow/Haul and that it is not necessary. The Tow Haul also changes the timing for when the transmission changes so you may stay in lower gears longer - even if not needed. Don't laugh, I just noticed this yesterday after owning the truck for almost 3 years.

I use the manual mode unless I am trying to keep the truck from speeding downhill. In manual in and around town, it helps slow the truck without having to get hard on the brakes. In the auto mode, I read where it will automatically turn on the tow mode and keep the truck at one constant speed going downhill. Whatever speed is present when you either remove your foot off the accelerator or brake, the truck will keep that speed. I tried this in Colorado when I got my new 17' F350. The auto mode kept the truck going down a 5% grade within three MPH of the 35 MPH speed I was going. It applied exhaust braking and downshifted when need all without me having to apply the brakes.

Must be a new thing...my 17 has a full and auto mode. From what I'm reading, it seems that Auto is tied to cruise control, and full is based on being in tow/haul mode. I'll re-read the manual later this evening.

The exhaust brake is on about 99% of the time regardless if towing or not. Got to keep the VGT working correctly on my 2008. I have about 106,000+ miles driving the truck this way.

Right Out of the 2017 Owner's Manual

Right Out of the 2017 Owner's Manual
Tow Haul mode:
E161509
To activate tow/haul, press the
button on the gearshift lever
once. The TOW HAUL indicator
light illuminates in the instrument cluster.
The tow/haul feature:
• Delays upshifts to reduce the frequency
of transmission shifting.
• Provides engine braking in all forward
gears, which slows your vehicle and
assists you in controlling your vehicle
when descending a grade.
• Depending on driving conditions and
load conditions, may downshift the
transmission, slow your vehicle and
control your vehicle speed when
descending a hill, without pressing the
accelerator pedal. The amount of
downshift braking provided will vary
based upon the amount you press the
brake pedal.
The tow/haul feature improves
transmission operation when towing a
trailer or a heavy load. All transmission
gear ranges are available when using
tow/haul.
Note: If your vehicle is equipped with the
Adaptive Steering System, enabling the
tow/haul feature will adjust the steering
response. In tow/haul mode the Adaptive
Steering system reduces vehicle sensitivity
to steering inputs at higher vehicle speeds
while maintaining the ease of parking and
maneuverability at low speeds. See
Steering (page 255).
To deactivate the tow/haul feature and
return to normal driving mode, press the
button on the gearshift lever when
tow/haul is active. The TOW HAUL light
deactivates. Tow/haul also deactivates when you power down your vehicle.

Engine Brake
There are two engine brake modes, manual
and automatic.
Manual Engine Braking
1. Press the button to switch on manual
engine braking.
2. Release the accelerator pedal to
maximize engine braking.
3. Apply the brakes. The transmission
downshifts to lower gears.
Note: The engine braking feature only
functions when you release the accelerator.
Note: You can shift the transmission to
lower gears with progressive range selection
(PRS) or manual shifting independent of
pressing the brakes.
Note: You can also use manual engine
braking with cruise control to improve grade
descent control.
Note: If your vehicle has Adaptive Cruise
Control, the speed control system uses the
selected engine brake mode, transmission
gears, and brakes to maintain the set speed
and distance to the vehicle being followed.
Automatic Engine Braking
1. Press the button twice to switch on
automatic engine braking.
2. Release the accelerator or brake pedal.
The system remembers your vehicle
speed.
Note: This feature offers smoother, less
aggressive engine braking during downhill
descents. It may not apply braking if the
vehicle speed is not increasing, although it
will apply full engine braking force when
needed to prevent acceleration. The system
automatically activates the engine brake
and, if necessary, downshifts the
transmission to lower gears to not exceed
your vehicle's set speed when the brake or
accelerator were last released.
Warning Lamp Conditions
• Illuminates when this feature is
switched on and the system is
operating properly. See Warning
Lamps and Indicators (page 105).
• Flashes when the engine brake is
disabled due to a fault or the engine
does not meet the required braking
conditions.
• Does not illuminate when the switch
or indicator is faulty.
You can switch the system on at anytime.
The system becomes active once the
braking conditions are met.
Braking Conditions
• Your vehicle is in a forward gear.
• The engine speed is above about 1500
RPM.
• Your foot is off the accelerator.
You can use this feature with tow/haul or
progressive range selection to provide
further increased engine braking. The
transmission automatically upshifts to
prevent the engine from entering the red
zone on the tachometer. See Automatic
Transmission (page 205).

Not sure if it's a good idea to have tow/haul, engine brake, exhaust brake in use with the cruise control on.
