Equalizer

What do those of you with Equalizer WD hitches do with them when you get to the campground? Seems like the whole apparatus must weigh 100 lbs and I am getting old. Jack

If I have a back in site I usually pull it off the truck and set it under the back of the trailer away from the road. If I have a pull thru site I have dropped it under the tongue of the trailer but I think I will start pulling the longer bars off and leave the ball portion on the truck. First I need to buy a locking pin.

i have a locking hitch pin so i leave the hitch head attached to the truck's receiver.
the bars i put across the tongue, behind the propane tanks.

I just bought a low profile bottle jack crane/hoist for pickup bed to help pick the Equalizer up and hold it while I put it on or take off. I will either leave it in the bed locked up or will use a dolly to move from hitch area to under the back of trailer locked to bumper. Back surgery forced me to look at these adjustments.

Could you post a pic of your hoist? Would like to see what you've got.
Thanks.

As soon as I'm back up on my feet I will install and put pics of it in use with Equalizer, fingers crossed it works as I planned.

I also have a lock pin and leave it attached. I am not even going to chance hurting my back when camping.

Equalizer

Thanks guys,

I'll probably do like Bikendan. Hate to drive everywhere with that big blob sticking out behind my vehicle but it beats lugging it around.

If I need to drive the truck around the campground, I just leave the hitch and bars attached to the receiver. I have added a pair of red reflective tape reflectors on the inside of the bars (about in the middle). I pull the bars out parallel to the bumper. The reflectors can now be seen and I save my back on short trips.

I also have a black plastic hitch ball cover that I place on the hitch ball to keep from transferring a grease stripe to my pants (or knees).

Great idea. I have been taking the bars off and placing them on the frame between the battery box and propane tanks (much less bending).

I take the bars off and toss them in the back of the Denali. If we are going into town where I know parking is a challenge I take the hitch part off as well and toss in the back (I have a hard plastic protective mat from GM covering the carpet). Even with a backup camera I don't like the idea of that sticking out of parking spaces...the Denali is long enough!

When I had a WDH, now have a 5th, I always took the hitch out and stuck it under the trailer tongue. I have seen, twice this month, tourists parking in town and back into the vehicle behind them with their hitch, which puts a nice dent in the bumper. How many of you have wracked your shins in a parking lot walking behind a vehicle with the hitch left in. I never thought that there could be a health problem and that is why the hitch was left in. I always put it down to lazy.

Our truck is long enough without leaving the hitch in place. DH removes it and puts it in the front hatch, but this DW is kind of freaked that he bent the frame around the opening from getting it in and out. I know it weighs a TON and it's not easy lifting it up to waist level. We're going to have to think of something else to do with it. I'm thinking of just getting a small Rubbermaid tote to store it in under the camper when we're camping. As for what to do with it when we get home.....maybe we'll put it in the same Rubbermaid and I'll help him lift it into the front hatch. DH leaves the bars on the frame behind the propane tanks or puts them in the front hatch.

I put this winch in to assist me in things like hooking up my Equalizer. 4 months ago it would not have been an issue but after back surgery it became a neccesity. Finally tried it today and it worked great. I used a dolly to move EQ into position then strapped it up, jacked it up, and hooked it up painfree. woohoo! As soon as the weather goes back into double digits we are hitting the road for maiden voyage.

I don't have an Equalizer, but the question applies I think. Weight-distributing hitch assemblies can be heavy.

I place the spring bars under the trailer at whichever end I deem most "walk-off resistant", and do the same with the hitch head and drawbar assembly if we'll be at camp for anything longer than a quick over-nighter. Too many banged-up knees on hitch heads left in place.

Bars, pins, and L-pins go in the front pass thru storage compartment. Head stays locked to the truck.

At the storage site, same thing, plus I put the head unit carefully inside the camper door. Last thing in, first thing out. Just put down a piece of cardboard or luan to keep grease/dirt off the floor.
