Equalizer & safety chain problem w/ grey wolf trailer

site team note- this thread was split off from another existing classified thread, this was off topic helpful info for others.

The equalizer did not work with my Grey Wolf 2016 26 rr. It pinched chains with minimal turns. Some others have had issues also. Some have moved chains and some have changed hitched. I see you have 2011 grey wolf just wanted you to be aware.

The OP is looking for the real Equal-i-zer brand.
They don't have chains.

You're using that brand name, to describe a different WDH.

I think what he is maybe saying is the safety chains. My equalizer pinches the safety chains. They are mounted just behind the trailer socket and the hitch head pinches them.

All trailers have safety chains the hitch pinched and broke SAFETY chains!!! I was talking about the real Equilizer hitch.

Off topic.. Burn what a POOR location to mount the chains.. They will do squat if the trailer does ever let go from the TV...

sorry, i have the 4pt. Equal-i-zer and it doesn't even come close to doing something like yours did. didn't even consider you were talking about the safety chains.

and many people use the term "equalizer" to describe all WDHs. happens a lot on RV forums.

I have told forest river and Equilizer. Both deny a problem and say my issue was the first they heard. Which I know is not true. I heard others on here with same issues. Guess I am only one with big mouth to let manufacture know.

how far back from the receiver hitch is the hitch ball? I know on my hitch I had 2 settings I could use so I pushed it in as close to the truck as possible and have plenty of slack on my chains.Remember the chains attach to the receiver hitch so the further back you push the ball the tighter those chains will become.
Mine was a Keystone trailer so maybe FR is using shorter chains?

it is weird that you have so much metal out around the area directly below the ball. I can see how a chain could get pinched in that.

The hitch is as close to the TV as it can. I will be relocating chains further back.

Even if chains went straight down the hitch would still pinch.

Yeah nothing about the slack will change a thing. The chains just should not be there period... The point of SAFETY chains and CROSSING the chains is to "catch" the trailer if it comes loose. Riddle me this Batman... How can a chain catch a trailer when they are only 1" apart... There is no "X" cradle and more than likely the trailer will miss and be "cradled" by the highway at 65mph.. 60 on china bombs. The chains should be mounted at least a foot apart IMO to be worth their purpose.

How difficult is it to relocate the chains? Picking my new grey wolf 26rr in early spring from the dealer and was going to have him install an equalizer WDH. Heard really good things about the hitch but not heard the chain pinching issue before.

Chains or no chains in the way, have to think you would hit the frame tongue.

On my unit, if I make a near 90 deg (street to driveway) turn I will at times kiss the frame tongue with the hitch head.

I have changed to Husky centerline TS. Just switched out do not know yet but just by looking at it the ball sits higher and not as much girth around ball. Looks like it would miss frame. Once I get all set up will post pics. You can have chains moved back. Maybe your dealer will do it for you? I have had issue trying to get chains moved. Will be relocating shortly since they got snapped.

I tried letting the Equilizer hitch manufacturer and forest River know but they seem to think mine is an isolated incident, even though I have seen a few on here also have issues. Io showed them riderblokes pictures and the other thread on the 26rr grey wolf chains. I believe riderbloke also let them know. If you have problems let them know maybe if they hear from enough people they will make Lippert go back to setting the chains back like they use to be.
