Equalizer hitch got rear-ended

After our recent trip, I failed to take off the hitch in a timely manner. Yesterday I got rear-ended and the hitch took the brunt of the impact. While I see no damage to the rear of the truck, I am concerned about the hitch and under the truck. I plan on going and getting it inspected.

Any thoughts?

REPLACEMENT! I got rear ended many years ago, insurance inspection said all looked good, I inspected it and couldn't see anything wrong.

Hooked up a small 4x8 trailer with nothing on it ... 2 miles later, when I got home the 2" receiver was bent down at a 20 degs !!!!!

Depends on what hit you:
a. If the vehicle that hit you took all of the damage to plastic parts, radiator, and other such things that aren't very solid, I would not worry about it. Many drivers leave their hitch in place just for that reason.
b. If the other vehicle did not seem to have any damage either, then something solid on their truck must have hit your hitch. In that case, the Equa-l-izer head could have sustained damage.

If this is an actual Equal-I-zer brand WDH, the most likely damage would be the square sockets that receive the spring bars. Try moving them by hand. If they took a hard hit, enough to bend something, they would likely be easy to move by hand.

The receiver hitch on my truck took the brunt of an accident a couple of years ago. The Bargman connector was all beat up, but there was no evidence of damage to the receiver (or even the bumper). But, I would never feel safe pulling my travel trailer with a receiver with "unknown damage".....who knows how it took the hit. The body shop sent the estimate in for replacement of the Bargman connector and the hitch, and it was replaced.

Definitely replace the hardware holding the receiver hitch to the truck. I would probably even replace the hitch at this point. I would also order and replace the entire hitch head to include the shank for the Equal-I-Zer. Why take any chances.

What did the other vehicle look like? That hitch head is a monster, I bet it made one heck of a dent!

How's your head? I have a different hitch but was also rear ended on the freeway with the impact on the hitch.

An impact directly on a hitch can equal 2.5 times the force. Please do have the hitch inspected along with the TV.

I went and had both the truck and hitch inspected. No damage was noticed and alignment was good.

As for the small import, that was is a different story. The hitch knocked a huge hole in the bumper and dented the metal below the radiator.

I think I escaped on the good die of this collision.

I would keep an eye on it and look for any new rust stains at welded joints.

Get the hitch replaced by their insurance. Why wonder/worry?
