I have seen many posts about wheels rubbing and tire failures/damage. Several got spacers from FR/Dexter/ALKO/Lippert for a fix. Are the torsion bars in a horizontal position or beyond horizontal? (Pointing up)

I'll be honest. I never checked the Torsion Bars. I called the dealer yesterday to check on how things were going. It's been there for a week and a half now. The woman that answered was only able to tell me that parts had been ordered. I'm anxious to see what they are going to end up doing with the axle situation.

I emailed Equal-i-zer since mine are the same and they said that is no big deal (which I find hard to believe) He said the sockets are case hardened and that is the outer layer cracking kind of like a m&m would. But either way they wanted to replace it and sent me a new set of sockets free. Go right to their website & shoot them an email.

I had an issue with tire clearance with the wheel wells. Turns out my trailer had the wrong mounting bracket for the torsion axles. The 4000 pound Dexter axles I had have 3 different mounting brackets. My original one was the low model and gave less than an inch clearance. The tires rubbed the wheel well through to the metal part of the floor. The high model would provide an additional inch or so more than the low model. There is also a third model that provides even more clearance. When Forest River repaired my trailer under warranty they replaced the axles with the highest clearance model and I now have about 5 inches clearance.
The Dexter representative told me they recommend at least 3 inches of clearance to allow for movement without rubbing the tires. The torsion arms are designed to be horizontal under fully loaded conditions. Mine were 22 degrees down unloaded, almost horizontal with the entire empty trailer on them, and should be horizontal when loaded for camping.
If you do not have the recommended 3 inch clearance I would take the trailer in for service to correct this condition. I think a number of trailers went out the door past the qaulity inspection with this condition. The Forest River warranty representative indicated to me that mine was not the first instance of tire clearance issues. Hope this helps.
Ya know, excellent question. And one I don't have the answer to! The rig is still at the dealer where it will be for the entire winter. They had it since October 1 or so and as a result I lost my free indoor storage. So I arranged to have the dealer hold onto it this year. I made a stop there the other day to unload a few last minute items only.
