Expedition Brake Controller

We just purchased a 2012 Ford Expedition which we will use to tow our trailer. Ours does not have the Ford factory brake controller, as they didn't start including them in the tow package until 2013. I worked a discounted installation of a factory controller in the deal but have a couple questions.

1. For those that have the Ford brake controller, any comments on how well it works in comparison with aftermarket controllers? We currently have a prodigy. The Ford controller is just a "squeeze" type control and there doesn't seem to be any readout, etc to get any feedback on the brake level.

2. If anyone has added an aftermarket controller to their expedition, where the heck did you put it? The factory controller is installed in a dash panel (which is what my wife wants). If I decided to move the prodigy controller I have, I cant see a place to put it without the problem of banging it with my knees, etc.

Thanks for any input.

if you already have a Prodigy, i see no reason to go thru all of that. i don't think you'll see much difference.
i know someone, on another RV forum, that owns a newer Expy and has a Prodigy P3.
i know he has pics of where he installed it. if you'd like, i can see if i can direct you to it.

Thanks for the reply. The only reason to get the Ford controller is that it would be installed in the dash and therefore not "hanging" down from the dash, but if the Prodigy is a better controller, then it is worth switching it. If you know someone that found a good place to mount it, that would be very helpful.

i'm not saying the Prodigy is a better BC, but that it seems to be as good, according to posts i've read on RV forums.
i seem to remember that at least one auto manufacturer, is using Tekonsha's technology for their built-in brake controllers. not sure if it's Ford or not.

I had a 1997 and 2003 Expy. Both had aftermarket controllers screwed to the dashboard and I'm 6'4" My knees did not come close to the controller and was never an issue. The wiring in case you don't know is up under the dash above the gas pedal.
Good luck.

I have a 2005 durango with a PII mounted below the dash, I do hit my knee on it occassionaly. I have a 2013 Expedition with factory Brake Controller, for me it is great not hitting it anymore. The only downside I see is not being able to see a display when applying the brake. I did like that about the PII.

I have had 2 fords with the factory controller and would not trade for any other controller. You don't have any leveling, sensitivity, or other issues. If you set it up like our rv dealer told us. Get your rig moving 30 and apply with maximum stopping short of a skid. We have had multiple trailers and they all stopped smoothly and predictably.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate it. My wife is pushing hard to get the Ford controller installed as it would blend in and not be noticeable. As part of the deal to buy the Expy we will get it at "their cost". We will see what that means.

The 2012 Expedition should have pretty much all the features that the newer F150s have, thus once the factory brake controller is installed and the system flashed to recognize it. The trailer control menu should flash up on you dash screen. The prodigy is nice, had on on my 2009 F150, but the factory unit is much nicer in my opinion as it works in sync with the ford integrated anti sway system.
