F-250 vs RM 2500 Diesel Payload/Tow Help
I've read lots of articles from 2011-2012 (the year range I am looking to get) comparing RAM 2500 vs. Ford F-250 vs. Chevy 2500 , all with their respective Diesel equipped options. Never is it just 1 single truck on-top the entire time.
What I don't seem to get is how when I look at the 2012 F-250 SuperCab 4x4 vs the 2012 RAM 2500 CrewCab 4WD, that Ford seems to best the RAM in payload by 1,000 pounds. that's huge to me. RAM is 2200, and Ford is 3380 or 3490 for short-bed. When I am thinking of hooking my trailer up with a 1300lb hitch weight, then putting 4 people in the cab, plus 30+ gallons of fuel, the only truck that allows me to use my bed for wood and other stuff is the Ford. I'd be at max payload on the RAM. How is it that I see guys pulling huge rigs with the SRW RAM 2500 and not be over payload?
Aren't these trucks supposed to be real close competitors? Some people are RAM fans, some are Ford fans, etc... but with base models having over 1,000lbs more payload, isnt that a huge difference?

The trucks have increased payload sustainability in 2013 and 2014 depending on Badge. I do know today the Ford Super Duty has the most Horsepower and Torque compared to a Ram.
The F250 Super Duty I just purchased has a Truck Camper Package in addition to the Trailer Tow package. This kicks the CCC up a bit. My research prior to purchase on my F 250 was Fifth Wheel Towing capacity, same as F 350 the way I am equipped. The payload is less by 400 lbs but not a huge deal for me.
Make sure you look at the actual truck sticker. The Trailer Life towing guide has some assumptions made and doesn't actually relate to the vehicle on the lot equipped with options.
I am a ford guy, have had one Dodge Pickup (a Dakota) that was a great truck and ran well, enjoyed it very much, no repairs. I have had one Titan as a work truck, again great truck no major issues. I have owned Four F 150's 2003, 2005, 2009, 2013. All very good, only brakes and tires and 1 upper control arm on the 2009. All 4 x 4. Now a F 250 Super Duty Power Stroke 6.7 Diesel.
If I was looking for resale check out the door stickers first then make sure the Ford has what you want over the dodge before purchase. If service records are available check that as well, the Power Stroke 6.7 was in 2012 and I have not heard many bad things about this engine.

I've been a Ford guy for many years. I won't say a bad thing about Ford... period. However, when I was looking last year, for equal equipment and so on, the Ford guys were about $6,000- higher in price. I made my choice, and since I liked the trucks equally, I bought the Ram. I'm not sorry... A year and 21K miles later, I still like the truck. I'm pretty sure if I'd bought the Ford, I'd still like the truck. Some say the Ford has more HP and Tq. The differences are so small as to make no difference... The magazines and other media are going to favor whichever manufacturer is spending the most advertizing dollars with them... so take all the reports with a grain of salt. Between these two, get what you like and can afford... I don't think you can really go wrong.

Who says they aren't over payload capacity? A lot of folks regularly tow beyond their means. Being able to move a rig doesn't necessarily mean they can move it safely. You're right though. In that year range (2011-12) Ford blew out the competition with payload capacity. Both makers (ohh.. did I forget you Chevy?? .. it's ok.. just do the best you can little fella ) seem to fluctuate for "top truck". It just depends on what factors are the most important to you in any given model year. Payload is always right up there on my list as well.

Ram has always under rated the towing capability of their trucks. Why? I do not know. Until the SAE towing regs were meet and then the towing ability was increased. Maybe it is the tires and wheels that are used on the Ram trucks in earlier years. If you have 17" tires/wheels like I did they are rated for only 3195 LBS At 70 PSI each. Which equals 6,390. LBS load support. Ram also states in their Ram Body Builder website that the maximum towing capability and payload are mutually excusive.

thanks for your info, everyone...
I am now looking at 2015 RAM 2500 4x4 SLT 6.7L Cummins Auto Tranny and the payload is 2360. Max trailer is more, so that is for sure up over previous years, but not payload. Ford 2015 comes in 3100 payload.
I guess it seems ford bests ram every year in payload?

I would go look at an actual truck. Ford gives payload numbers based on stripped down trucks. Dodge does not do that. I would bet when you look at actual trucks you will find the payloads are around the same.
Look for a 1 ton. Never worry about payload after that.

I have a 2013 Laramie 6.7 diesel and my payload is 2540lbs and max trailer pull is 17,400lbs

It depends on body config and trim levels. You can get any of the big 3 with high or low payloads. You can't always use the charts. You need to actually look at the door stickers. I've seen both Ram and Ford 3/4 ton diesels with less than 2000lbs for payload.

A 2011 I am looking at shows 2065. If it is a 30+ fuel tank I hope that number excludes fuel. Possibly a 150lb driver?
My 2015 f150 has a sticker of 1631. 400 more is nice but maybe not the end all be all truck. I'm taking a big loss on this. Hmmm....

That sticker I posted above is from a diesel. The sales guy took it for me and txt it to me. The charts I posted which of course are not exact are crazy higher. They did shoe diesel there too.

Diesels are heavy, they take away from payload. Some people just go by axle ratings and call it good. It all depends on what you want to do. My GVWR is 9200 and my axles are rated for 11800. Good luck with the new truck, whatever it is.

My 2015 Ram 3500 6.7L 4x4 long bed with Aisin tranny and 3.73 axle DRW, ratings are 5680# pay load 32,300# GCWR, 14,000# GVWR, max trailer weight 23,500#.
when you get a truck it will depend on engine, axle ratio and DRW or SRW and tranny, 4x4 or not, long bed or short and so on.
Sounds like you need to do more research. Ram is the only manufacture that's SAE tow rating certified. All others estimate. If I went with my set up and 4.10 axle my GCWR would have been 37,500#.
So do more research and more truck is better than border line.

When I got a F250 XLT, CC, long bed, diesel in February 2011 the Ram was almost $4,000 more and it had old technology when compared to the Ford and Chev/GMC.
The Chev/GMC was a lot higher then other two and the RAM is made in Mexico.
