*Chuckles* Yep, I spec'ed the truck for the 5er. We wanted the 150 because we did not like the ride of the 250.

If you want to drop a extra $2K for a turbo intercooler, tuner & Borla exhaust you can boost the EcoBoost to just over 450HP with 510 ft-lb Torque @ 2500RPM - that blows the doors off the Ford 6.2L V8 and compares favorably with the 250 class (they still out-torque the 150 by 300 or so though)

Here's a good quote:
"Pulling a 10,000-pound trailer, the EcoBoost powered F-150 never hesitated up big hills at Ford's Michigan Proving Grounds in Romeo. (It's rated to handle up to 11,300 pounds.) Maybe the eco-part of the boost happens every time you find yourself pulling your foot off of the accelerator because you think you're going too fast." – The Detroit News (2011)

Pappcam,

We have had this discussion on another thread earlier this year LOL. All of us have scaled our rigs and all of us are well within spec (I can tow up to 11,800 & have a max pin weight of 2400). I am at 9500 fully loaded and pin at 1458.

Seriously, Ford has done some amazing things with their trucks - now, can you run a stock F150? No not even. But when you trick out the new F150s with a EcoBoost Engine, HD tow package, anti sway system, Electronic limited slip 3.73 differential, and keep all your TV & 5er tires inflated to spec you can darn near tow the Statue of Liberty

I have NO problem towing my 5er up a 8% straight line grade doing 55-60 @ 3300RPM. On a flat interstate? I have to set cruise control or I will be doing 95MPH!

"Properly Equipped" is the caveat though. And those options aren't listed on the fender decals.
To many an F150 is an F150 is an F150...

I learned on our expedition to read the fine print, so to speak. 17" tires were optional and reduced payload 500lbs. 4x4 reduced it. As payload drops GCWR dropps also. As options are added unladen weight goes up so payload drops some more. The driveline wasn't the limiting factor - these days it rarely is.

My outback has 170hp..my 88 Jeep P/U had 170 and back then was a beast compared to most things on the road, HP wise. Our silverado has what, 305hp? 30-40 years ago you need a big block to get that kind of power, if you even got it then. And people pulled big loads just fine.

When I went shopping for our new truck I did a lot of research on options and had the dealer search for them and I verified they were on the truck. Most of 1500 4x4s you see have "Z71" on the rear fender - that's teh off road susp package. For towing the 85 is preferred. Still came with P rated tires...but the rest is in good shape. Not sure what the difference is (besides shocks and decals).

Good points! I did the same thing. I was amazed what a dealer equipped lot truck set up for "towing" did not have!

I even spoke with the fleet order manager at our Ford dealer. He is the 'professional' that orders all the vehicles for the dealership. He told me that he was trained to consider a F150 with 4x4 and a basic trailer package to be a "towing package."

Far from it. If you are setting up a truck to be a tow vehicle you do NOT want 4x4 (like you said, adds weight and decreases GCWR).

After Dale (Fleet Mgr) saw our truck set up to pull a lightweight 5er (we stopped by the dealership on the way home from picking up the 5er), he told me he was going to re-think his ordering process tow packages

I pulled the trigger on an F150 Ecoboost only to find out the hard way that my payload at only 1200 lbs wasn't enough to be in spec with the trailers we were looking at. I was fortunate enough that the dealer let me exchange it for a max tow pkg f150 and now my payload is just right for us (1766 lbs I believe) which will be more than enough for a Roo 19 or even the 231kss with a few hundred pounds to spare in the truck if absolutely needed. Glad I was able to make the switch. I'm not pulling a 5er though anytime soon with this truck, or ever.

Pretty sure you're over estimating how much payload you need. Any 1/2 ton should handle a hybrid with no problems.

I guess it's never a bad thing to have more than enough truck though.

I imagine it depends on the family and what you carry. I think that Roo can realistically have a tongue weight of 800+ pounds:

Yea the est. tongue weight itself was about 850 lbs @ 13%. Add 600 lbs in passengers alone for my family and we're already over specs. But this is OT, just wanted to share my experience as far as payload went when I pulled the trigger on the 1st truck.

Twin turbo acually. 6 cyl 365 hp 427# torque and with the max tow package 11,300# capacity and plenty of capacity for pin. Adirondack mountains don't slow me down and highway speeds are no problem. 21mpg best and 11 towing my 5er. Not bad for a half ton pickup without the cost of an F250 or diesel.

Can't be sure with unknown load in basement and 3 batteries but estimate 1600 or 1700.
