F250 won't read trailer

I just bought a F250 to tow my Flagstaff 5th wheel. However, when I hook it up I get power to the 5th wheel but my truck says no trailer connected. I pulled it a few feet and it didn't seem to have any brakes either. I looked in the truck's booklet and it said it may not read all trailers. I called a Ford dealership and said I might have to bring the truck in for them to hook it up. The 250 has a tow package.
Anyone have any ideas on this?

For members to help, what year is F250 and does it have integral brake controller?

Any chance a fuse isn't in for brake controller?

You may indeed have to bring it to dealer and have them program either the GEM or RAP modules depending on what year it is if it did not come with brake controller from factory.

It's a 2012 F-250. I has an integrated brake controller.

I would take it to the dealer then, sounds like they may have to flash the RAP module or the PCM itself to recognize it. Have you towed any other trailers with brakes with it?

I took the 250 to the dealer and they hooked it up. Called and said it read their machine. Picking it up tomorrow and we'll see if it now reads my 5th wheel. This is the first trailer I've pulled with it.

In sure the TT is wired for 7 pin and is correct, my F250 had trouble seeing the TT but not the 5th wheel, found that the TT was wired wrong.

The 250 still won't read the trailer. Guess my next step is to take the 5th wheel to the dealer and see what they can do. The 250 read the plug at the truck dealership.

I have a 2013 F350 and have had a lot of trouble getting the connection as well. My son seems to never be able to plug in the connector and have it work. I wipe it in and out several times and can then get it to connect. I've never had any problem with it staying connected, once it is recognized, but I really don't like the feel of the Ford connector. The Silverado I previously had never had this problem, and the connector seemed to be much tighter.

Thanks for the info Mike. A friend of mine suggested doing the same thing. He mentioned cleaning the trailer plug and the plug-in on the 250. I'll try that tomorrow.
Next step if that doesn't work is to check the 250 fuses.

Wires/Pins

Make sure the 5r cable is wired for what the truck expects. Try plugging the 5r into another truck or 7 pin receptacle. Make sure there are no open or broken wires on the 5r plug.

You can find all kinds of 7 pin wiring diagrams on-line.

Let us know how it gets resolved.

Good Luck
