fifth wheel??

Hey guys i just put a 16K Reese fifth wheel hitch in my truck i am new to this Camper world and fifth wheel. I know this is a stupid question but i can figure out how to get the safety latch for the handle to flip back?? I have wiggled the handle trying to get the latch to flip back no dice?? I have pulled on it pretty hard but still not flip back? Is there a special trick for a not so smart guy??

Yes there is a safety latch on the side of the hitch that is connected to the jaw handle grap bar. It has to be flipped back to be able to work the jaw handle cause it is like a lock on the handle when it is flipped down. SO the grap handle will not even move and the jaws are closed right now.

That safety latch should just lift up and back. Have you tried spraying it with a lubricant like WD-40?

I just went out and got a little bit more aggressive with it. Used a hammer LOL it flipped up. Put i guess i will have to use a hammer all the time cause it needs a little tap to get it up and a little tap to get it to flip back down all the way to. Is anybody else this tight?

Mine just kinda lays in the groove (if it's what I think you're talking about). It has a ring-pin thing that goes into it to keep it from flipping back.

Is it only tight when you start to lift the latch if so it needs a little amount of filling where it fits over the handle. Or is it the bolt holding the latch on to tight?

I don't know. Mine has never been tight. It almost sounds like something is wrong with yours. Can you post a picture of it?
