Question Fifth Wheel Hitch size

My dealer installed a 16 K fifth wheel in my 350 ford. Gross weight of trailer is 18,000lbs. He says. I won't have any problems towing. What do you guys think?

Don't sound right...typically always size your hitch bigger than your RV GVWR?

x2 I wouldn't do it. I had a 16k hitch with a 14k trailer and switched to a 20k hitch. Night and day difference.

Do you have the make/model on the camper?

Mon. a.m. I would be back at the dealer requesting a higher capacity hitch. Not a safe setup IMO.

If something happened, and your insurance company found out, you likely wouldn't be covered.
Those third-party multi-million dollar lawsuits suck without insurance coverage.

I'm a big fan of overkill. I bought a 18K hitch because of the way it mounted and only have a 11-12 K trailer. I doubt whether I will get anything bigger because of the places we like to camp.

I would take it back. Sounds like he sold you what he had in stock.

I can hear it know, Oh a 16k hitch will be fine as long as you don't load anything into the TH. HAHA I wouldn't do it.

Actually this sounds downright illegal on the dealerships behalf!
Selling mismatched equipment with the conclusion being a mechanical failure!
I would be very worried about this dealer ...... VERY !

If you want an external opinion, call the hitch manufacturer and ask them. I bet the answer's gonna be the same as what ya'll stated here.

Ok, so the hitch is rated for 16K and he thinks it's OK to overload it by 2K?

And that's the manufacture's spec'd weight of the trailer? (they always weigh more)

Take it back, smack him in the face for already putting you out on a limb and get a hitch that is at least rated for the trailer weight.

Better yet; get your money back and go find someone who actually knows what he's talking about.....

Bad dealer! Shame on him. They make different sizes for a reason. Don't mess with the numbers or they will mess with you.

Insist that the dealer give you signed written assurance that you will be OK with his under rated hitch. Bet he will try to find a better one for you.
