First trip to the scales

First time RV owner.. DW wanted a camper so she could be with me when I'm gone about every weekend..We have a new Vengance 25v Toyhauler with a 2018 2500HD Duramax as the TV.. Filled the TV with DEF, diesel and the DW. Filled the hauler with Water (100 gal) fuel (20 gal), generator, grill, drinks, food, clothing, chairs, EZup, tools, 2 dirt bikes, riding gear, oils and misc camping gear/ supplies.

Set the E4 hitch (38 -7/8 in the front with no trailer, 40-1/8 hitched with no WD, 40 with WD).

First ticket just the truck #229)
Second truck and trailer without/WD (#230)
Third truck and trailer with /WD.(#231)

I was surprised at the truck weight. Little heavier than I thought it would be.
Equally surprised at the amount of weight the E4 redistributed.

Do I determine TW by the difference between drive axle on ticket 1 and 2?..Then TW + trailer axle weight equals trailer GVW?
Interested in any comments.
Thanks
Bob

Tongue weight is 960 lbs. Second truck weight minus first truck weight.

From the scale weights, it looks like your setup is pretty well dialed in. Heck, even without the WD bars on, your axle weights are still within the max ranges for both the axles and GVWR. Good for you in having enough truck to safely pull that weight trailer.

I was able to go over a scale on the side of the road today and confirmed all truck and trailer axles are under their max and theres still 1000+ pounds payload to spare. It's a very good feeling.

What Fonzie said, 960. Your set up looks really good.

Not taking sides in a typical controversy, but I could not help but notice that, according to https://fifthwheelst.com/, MOST RVs and TVs exceed published weight limits.

If true, then most RVers are exceeding weight limits; and those within weight limits are a minority.

Hmmm...

Not in and of itself.

Does it mean that most RV's are unsafe or at unreasonable risk? What we don't know is if this "overweight" majority of RVers have experienced overweight-related failures or accidents at unacceptable rates. If not, then maybe they are right, of course...

I have not figured out how to start a thread that would inform us on actual accident rates related to overweight condition. Unfortunately, the information I've seen here on overweight related accidents and failures is anecdotal.

So I'm still in the "hmmmm..." crowd and open to information from all perspectives.

The weight, sticker, payload and state liscense, and manufacturing decisions all play a role in this discussion. I have wasted far too much of my time looking into it.

There is not, to my knowledge, any statistical etc. evidence of increased accidents etc related to being over limits on non commercial folks.

Stops on the highway to weigh rv’s axles are uncommon.

Ocassionally a police officer will stop someone who’s bumper is dragging the ground, but not common. Usually cars.

I believe the majority of folks are over some sticker value. Mostly payload.

Perhaps as we are for the most part older folks and we are more responsible and drive safer as a rule.

Don’t know.

"Do I determine TW by the difference between drive axle on ticket 1 and 2?..Then TW + trailer axle weight equals trailer GVW?" Yes & yes. Numbers look good. I'm just happy to see someone actually using a scale instead of adding up weight estimates towards a payload sticker number.

The answer to what can my 1/2 ton tow; Generically whatever TT has a GVWR less than TV’s max tow rating. Specifically is found on CAT scale via weight distribution with TV TT & WDH. Best motor & gearing all 5 Mfgs within specs IE safe & stable normally to 8k but passengers & bedload reduce this. RAM 1500 ED max tow 9,200, max axle ratings 3,900, max 09-18 CVWR 15,950, axle weights me & gear 3,240 steer 2,560 drive

Thanks for the feedback..My friends with TTs accuse me of overanalyzing and micromanagement but after 28 years in IT and project management I'm a little bit anal when it comes to planning.. Thier response is load it up hook it up and go...
Thanks
Bob

So I'm still in the "hmmmm..." crowd and open to information from all perspectives. ME TOO .... "hmmmm..." There is no thread I agree .... So many variables and factors. to many to consider all of them but so important to address them all ... driving these rigs is a major job and all precautions should be addressed .... and discussed on here to help everyone.

I towed TT's with my Dodge Ram 1500 for 15 years before I had my 'almost didn't stop in time white knuckle experience' with a truck-trailer combo that was just on the edge of the weight ratings.

That trip was the very last time I ever towed with my most favorite vehicle I've ever owned.

I learned my lesson...never again!

I was lucky...many others aren't as lucky.

The moral of this is that you just never know when you will find out just how much truck you don't have.
