I once watched a guy make an elephant disappear into thin air. I don't believe anything any of them say.
People seem to forget that aluminum is not a new material; OTR trucks have been made from it for decades. I'd take an aluminum bodied truck on a boxed steel frame any day. If it gets damaged I'll do the same as I would with any other material. Call the insurance and get it fixed. In the meantime I'll enjoy not worrying about rusty fenders and such.
To my mind it is much more important to know if the box frame is sealed completely. I've had box frames rust from the inside out before, nearly impossible to fix that.

The fellow said "same empty toolbox" before the Chevy test but if you look at 1:40 in the video, you'll see two tool boxes. Before the Ford test he asked the young man if the box was heavy - not empty. Actually, I take back my earlier comment that they should have used the same box. After the Ford's test, the tool box corner could have been flattened out making the Chevy test less effective. They should have dumped the tools from the first box into the second box to show it was an equal test. I have no doubt that an aluminum truck bed will puncture before a steel bed will. I just suspect they played games to make the Ford's puncture from the tool box test more dramatic.

Ford rolled out the aluminum body for 2015 F150. Two model years later they roll aluminum out in the Super Duty. Is it a different aluminum? If not, why have we not heard people raising cain about their F150 bed being punctured or damaged in any way?

My thought is because it is not an issue. I mean really, no matter what truck you have would you load it in that manner.

Anyway, it makes the Chevy guys happy but if it was really an issue I don't think we would need a staged test to point it out, we would have heard from 2015 and 2016 F150 customers.

Now I really question this demo. Watch the toolbox drop in the Ford. They show it from 3 different angles. 2 times the box falls and tumbles toward the cab of the truck and one time it tumbles across the gap in the tailgate toward the back of the truck. Very poor editing. And I always place my empty, not heavy tool box on the rail of my truck.

I have a 2015 F250 so I guess I have the really good Ford but I can't believe Ford would take another model to aluminum if they were not confident in the material. Time will tell.

Although I'm quite sure Government Motors scripted/planned/manipulated that video where the outcome was the way the wanted it, it does illustrate the downside to aluminum vs steel.

I was never concerned about aluminum in general, however, for a work truck that takes a beating through normal use, the aluminum isn't going to withstand as much.

I can see other manufacturers concede to aluminum in the future due to positives outweighing negatives. I'm sure it will the the greatest thing since sliced bread when they adopt it. LOL.

I did some reading and is there really a spec for "military grade" ?

Professional grade
Contractor grade
Nuclear grade
Aircraft grade

Not bashing no one - just seems a bunch of words to sell something - I would figure the aluminum in the bed would be a lot heavier grade(thickness) vs side panels.
Aluminum wont stretch like steel - But I'll sit back and enjoy the commercial on T.V. and hope my bed doesn't fall off my Toyota.

I was in the Military.

I tried to stay warm in Military Grade Clothes. No dice.
I tried to keep a Military Grade Weapon functioning. No dice.
I tried to walk in Military Grade Boots. No dice.

No thanks!

There is enough members on here that have the ford f-150 with the same bed I guess. Never heard of a complaint yet. As far as the responder to how will it hold a hitch. You have a real problem if it's not bolted to the frame rails, has nothing to do with the bed but it sits on it. Nobody knows what grade they will be using for the 2017 f-250 or F-350, if you do show it to me writing. Chevy is losing sales again so they come out with cr&p like we are stupid. No way possible for that tool box to hit on the exact same angle. Also they didn't dump the insides to the new tool box. who knows if they were even the same material. Yes the Sky is falling...

Bingo, after 20 years of Naval Aviation military and aircraft grade just doesn't hold the same value. Its more about meeting the minimum specs for the lowest dollar.

Don't fret. The rust will soon make your Ram's bed look worse than Ford's aluminum bed with the holes ripped through it.

I bought an aluminum wheelbarrow once.

That was a big mistake. While it was lighter and more expensive than the steel wheelbarrows I was used to, it went into the dumpster in less than a year. I still have and use the steel wheelbarrows I purchased before that aluminum one.

If you are worried about the aluminum bed, just buy a new Honda Ridgeline. Lol

Everything the military buys is bought against a "bid spec" which gives some minimum standards the component must meet. These are usually called "mil-specs." But there's nothing that says a mil-spec is any more stringent than anybody else's spec. So, yeah, it's just a marketing ploy!

All I can say that the bed made by Ford and out of aluminum will definitely have Major issues. Sure dents easily.. Stick with Chevy all metal Later RJD
